{Appearance}Hair Color & Style: Dark Red / Long & Loose - Josh has loose, shoulder length, dark red hair. He lets it fall where it may with minimal care, and uses his hat to keep it away from his face. When trying to make a good impression, he might fold it up under his hat, but for the most part, it is ignored.
Eyes: Grey blue, and usually narrowed. They do not have any sort of order or pattern to the pigmentation of the iris; instead, they are a composition of various shades of the same color. When it comes to expressions, his eyebrows have more relevance than his eyes, given that the latter always look tired. Long hours studying texts and picking out fine details have left him good at spotting things, but bad at tracking objects as they move, especially when using hand eye coordination.
When he is angry, the eyes narrow and his brow furrows more than normal. When he is happy or at least relaxed, the furrows are completely gone, and his gaze softens.
Clothing/Accessories: His weathered hat is a dark shade of brown; it has lost its rigid form, the top being especially floppy, and doesn’t hold the shape of the crown anymore. It even used to be waterproof, but only a few small patches still hold this capacity. His hat is always in his reach, even if decides to take it off to eat, he will make sure to keep it close and away from others’ hands.
His duster, on the other hand, looks newer than the hat and seems to have to been made to last. It is windproof, which allows him to travel light, without the need to use extra layers when it’s cold or worry if he walks through a sandy area. It is fairly light, with vents under the arms to keep it cool and without an a linen insert, so it isn’t extremely warm. It has a pair of pockets in inside and in the outside, and a cape a little longer than usual, to flip it if needed. Due to the usefulness of this garment, Josh has no need to take it off most of the time. If he's hot, he'll open it, if he's cold, he might wear a scarf, he even uses it as a blanket to sleep. The only occasion he might have to take off is if the weather if hot and humid.
Under the duster, his clothes are pretty standard. He wears long pants and simple long sleeve shirts or button ups, usually in neutral colors, browns and greys, and a little of red or blue if he’s using an accessory, like an scarf. He wears a small iridescent helix fossil on a necklace, but unless his duster is open or off, it is hidden, and, if he's been taking notes or inspecting artifacts, pieces of paper and tools are usually found sticking out of each pocket.
General Appearance: Josh is usually slumped over, his shoulders hunched, especially after walking a long distance. When he is in a good mood, he stands up straight, managing to cut an impressive figure. He usually stands out due to his attire, but his annoyed demeanor keeps most people at bay.
His hair stands out most in bright light, causing it to seem a brighter red, otherwise, it usually looks more brown. His clothing doesn't change much, if he's hot, he'll open the duster, if he's cold, he might wear a scarf.
While his duster gives him a long form, his build is fairly average, a little more on the pudgy side. While he has some muscles, they are not a defining feature. Overall, he doesn't really stand out, he's not unattractive, but not going to win any contests off his face alone, either.
When angry, he will stand taller, pursing his lips and keeping limbs close to him. When relaxed, he will stretch and take a lot of deep breaths.

{Biography}
{Personality}A past spent in the heart of a paranoid, exploitative government has rendered Josh distrustful of other people. Despite first impressions, he does try to find the good in people and situations, but holds strictly to a policy of "not my problem" when it comes to things that happen around him. While this is not completely set in stone, going against this causes a fair amount of inner turmoil, especially if getting involved is not a minimal risk proposition. Living in a city where stopping a theft gets you arrested to make sure you weren't involved resulted in the ability to rationalize inaction most of the time. To Josh, we are all people just trying to make our ways through life, and it stinks for everyone, so its not his job to take on your struggles. Because of this view, he has a lot of pride for things he's done, but is usually stunned by acts of kindness from strangers.
A failed revolutionary, he does not dwell on the past, preferring to focus more on making sure that at the end of the day he is as safe and free as he can be. Seeing the failure an punishment of his friends and co workers tempered his drive to do what is right. He is prone to loneliness, especially if he does not have work or any sort of task before him, and he tries to make continuing on (regardless of direction) a full time task. He doesn't see himself as a bad person, to tell the truth, he doesn't really believe that there are good or bad people, just people who do good or bad things. He does, however, hope for a day when he could be completely open with at least one person.
He usually comes across as dour or cynical, mistrustful of others, preferring to put up a gruff front to keep people at a distance. He values the past and the legacy of it, which is part of why he dresses the way he does and is so attached to his hat. When he gets excited about a discovery, or small talk about the field, he tends to drop his guard, becoming more expressive and eager to speak to anyone and everyone.
When meeting a new person, he is guarded, but willing to give them a chance. Getting beyond the guarded acceptance takes longer than most people get, but deep down he himself wants to be accepted in a way that he could trust everyone, despite what his survival instinct tells him. While he is always most focused on ensuring his own well being at the end of the day, honest, personal appeals to decency do more to sway him than any sort of inspirational, moralistic propaganda.
Something of a romantic, he starts to get flustered around women who are not immediately put off by his demeanor, especially if they show any interest in him as a person (even if it is not explicitly romantic interest.) He hates excessive rules, especially ones that don't make sense, but usually does not make a point of breaking them without reason, and tends to follow rules more out of a desire to not draw attention to himself than any sort of respect for the social cohesion the rules provide.
He especially has a hatred for bureaucracy, the more steps involved in doing what should be a simple task, the more his ire grows. Especially annoying for Josh are the rules and laws that control language and hinder the truth. However, Josh is more likely to work around an issue than try to change it if it involves any sort of significant risk.
Josh is most happy when surrounded by texts or a task related to his field of study. While he may not seem happy to be with either people or pokemon sometimes, those who know him will quickly point out that he is incapable of actually enjoying real solitude. When feeling down, or needing to unwind, he will walk streets or suddenly decide to get a drink from a shop, making an attempt at small talk, or coming to a colleague to discuss even inconsequential things.
When pushed into a corner, or in a situation where he can't just leave in good conscious, Josh will hesitate, wrestling with the desire to take action and weighing against the risk of it. Those who abuse power, especially when it involves any sort of bureaucracy, are guaranteed to get him worked up, but until it gets too out of hand or involves someone he is close to, he will not act. He will often try to rationalize this, the harder he finds it to do so, the more his arguments about not getting involved rely on the fact that its simply not his problem.
His approach to pokemon is purely a rational one, weighing overall power or utility against the difficulty of raising the pokemon in question. He tends to be judgemental, and can be harsh on those who don't meet his expectations. Given time, it is possible he might change his outlook, both on pokemon and getting involved.

{History}Born in the coastal town of Olhalo, Josh's early years were shaped by much of the formation of the fledgling government. Times were hard, and was spent a lot of time helping round the ranches that made the best use of the poor, salty soil in the area. While much of his childhood was spent around various pokemon, he never took any sort of extreme liking to them. To him, they were always in need of attention, and never really worth all the work. Especially the dumb ones used for food. Sadly, they were the only company he really had for most of the time, as the children were not allowed to play when there was work to be done, and everyone was too tired by the end of the day. He did, however, love the long nights with his mother, grandmother, and father listening to stories of the battles waged long ago. He would often go to sleep dreaming of the great battles, of the different people there might be all around the world, and the stories they might have to tell.
Since all he had was the stories to go by, and there wasn't a lot of literature thanks to the monolithic entity the government (tried) to present, his curiosity turned to understanding these cultures, finding out the facts about them. The closest thing he got to this was the histories in school that talked about the various invasions. He decided then that he would find the facts, even if he had to do it by piecing the information together one minute detail at a time.
He proved to be adept at his studies, earning the right to aim for higher education, a chance he saw as a way to escape a future as a rancher. So many of them who rode the government vehicles to the big city were like him, isolated but bright young men and women, and many of them hit it off immediately. While many in his family supported his choice, his mother always reminded him to value his past, and the history of his family. She would often send him what little bits she could spare when he left to study in the main city. His studies focused on anthropology, and later on deciphering the various documents and records left by the various cultures that had invaded Arkeido. His studies were as much in these ancient cultures as it was in their languages, and though he never reached full fluency, he gained some proficiency with most of the common languages in the modern world. At his graduation, his mother sent him his hat, a hand me down from his grandfather, who had fought during the insurrection. At first, Josh was embarrassed to wear it, but the harsh sun and long hours at the dig quickly eroded any hesitation.
At first, Josh was happy, working in the dirt and parchment from ages long past filled him with joy. Sharing discoveries with his coworkers brought elation, a sense of oneness as an entire group would buzz about a discovery. However, as the agency overseeing the institute became more emboldened, they required more censorship and fabrication as far as discoveries went, and even the destruction of some of the artifacts. While the life of a scholar was better than most could hope for, life in the city quickly taught him to avoid getting involved. The atmosphere of paranoia caused him to avoid letting others get involved with him.
Those first years were marked by joy and sorrow, the excitement of finding a new discovery being tempered by the process which determined its value by its ability to contribute to the glory of the Arkeido Government. For a brief period, he tried to find ways to get involved with the revolutionary movement, but when several friends and co workers were charged with conspiracy and executed or imprisoned, he decided to find a way to escape the grasp of the government, rather than try to change it. Especially since his tendency to just blurt out thoughts was starting draw attention to him. It wasn't long until his work shifted from any sort of actual study or practice to pure propaganda. His enthusiasm for his chosen field quickly turned to cynicism. Many of those who had first entered the school with him were now gone, washed out, convicted of treason, or missing.
His internship coming to an end, Josh received his certificate of study, and began applying for work outside Arkeido. While it took a few years, he finally received a response from a society in Godai that was looking for someone with his abilities. As the months passed, he finally received his immigration card from Godai and embarked on a ship.
Upon arrival, however, he found that the position had been terminated, and he'd been notified via a letter that was currently en route to a residence he no longer lived in. As Josh sat on the pier in Armadour Port, contemplating what to do, he became aware of a man standing over him. Tall and willowy, the man smiled pleasantly, explaining that he was from the historical society, and figured that Josh might not have gotten the letter. The two talked for a bit, discussing a little bit of this and that. Finally, the man stood up, handing Josh some paperwork.
Since he couldn't work for the society right now, he might consider working for the various historical organizations on the side, and being a trainer would help him get from place to place, so long as he took the TIS. After signing it the paperwork, the man gave Josh the address of a man who could help him get a pokemon, and an old (if dated) trainers pack, complete with food past the expiration date and a few banged up pokeballs. All this for a few translated documents, of course.
It wasn't going to be one of the standard starters one might get in the lab, but it would be a pokemon. With a little reluctance, Josh headed to the address. The man at the breeder's asked a lot of questions, trying to figure out what to pick. Eventually, annoyed, he gave Josh a pokeball, and shoved him out the door. Pokeball in hand, and unexpected, as well as unwanted path ahead of him. Part of him was scared to see what his starter was, knowing his luck, and it had only been bad, it was borderline useless.

{Personality}Ridiculously shy, this Grubbin is even afraid of his own shadow! Due to his cowardly ways, his parents and siblings have recently abandoned him in hopes that one day he'll overcome these silly fears. Now that they're in a new environment, they have to unload their burdens. Too bad he simply can't and spends the time hiding and sniffing away. Unfortunately, it's been a few days since his last meal. He needs food... but that means going in the open and finding it. Oh geez. Oh no. OH NO. He can't. He just can't...! Can anyone help him?

{Personality}Oh, this sassy lil thing! This gal here absolutely loves to mock others... well from a distance. By always shaking his tail feathers, this Honchkrow enjoys the exasperated looks she receives from her fellow Pokemon. While she doesn't always have a direct hand in causing these shenanigans, she definitely does go looking for trouble. Once she finds it and is in time to see the outcome, away she goes to make sure everyone sees her smug little face shaking her butt to the rhythm of mockery!

{Personality}This creature loves exploring new things, seeing new places, and meeting new people or Pokemon! Their curiosity knows no bounds! However, unfortunately for the normal type, their appearance tends to scare others off. While it may be very affectionate, loving, and protecting of those around them, it has been known to be rather naïve, often getting itself into dangerous situations. In the end, the Null tends to be more childish than anything, and food is the best bait! However, take that away, and you’ll be getting temper tantrums for days!

{Personality}BLOOP BLOOP. This guy here loves making noises, especially when he's just gliding across the water. BLOOP BLOOP! He's loud, and honestly doesn't know when to stop, and best of all, he doesn't understand boundaries. Though not a violent little bugger, he has been told he can come across as... too aggressive? Honestly, all the Surskit wants to do is play, and race against people who can beat him. After all, they don't call him the race king for nuthin'!
