Character Name: Bailey Hugo Nickname: Bails (to her chagrin) Gender: Female Age: 16 Trainer Class: Athlete Height: 5'6" Weight: 122 pounds Religion: Arceism Hometown: Tiensee, South Godai Character Theme: Resolve |
{Hair Color & Style}Hair Color & Style: Bailey's hair is a bright golden blonde, bleached to a much lighter color due to intense exposure to sunlight. It's naturally very wavy, and it falls to roughly her shoulder blades. It's softer than it looks, but knots up very easily. Usually, she wears simple ponytails or other hair styles to keep it out of her face when working out. {Eyes}Eyes: Two soft hazel eyes dot Bailey's face. They are large, round, and have long eyelashes that emphasize her expression. The whites of her eyes are bright. Naturally nearsighted, she normally has to squint at things that are far away. {Clothing & Accessories}Clothing/Accessories: Bailey is not exactly what you'd call a fashionista. Most of her clothes were bought at a convenience store bargain bin, though not for lack of money- Bailey goes through clothes very quickly due to her active and somewhat destructive lifestyle, so there's not really a point in buying better brands if they're just going to end up torn and stained anyways. On normal days, she wears a T shirt, rolled up sweatpants, and worn down sneakers that are somehow still functioning after months of abuse. Most of her T shirts are solid color black, red, brown, or white- but she does have a few graphic tees she talked her mom into lending her from her shop. Her sweatpants are all shades of black, gray, and blue, and the sneakers are a dark red that often look awkward with her choice of outfit. When working out, she tends to take off the t shirt to reveal a form fitting tank top beneath it. Bailey is not particularly interested in makeup or jewelry, but does like to collect rubber bracelets from various tourist shops that she puts around her arms. In colder temperatures, she tends to layer clothing, and dons a red fluffy jacket. She does not own much in the way of clothing appropriate for the cold due to the hot climate of her home town, Tiensee. When training with her pokemon, she often wears a padded kevlar vest, arm guards, and shin guards to protect from most stray attacks, as well as a pair of goggles that were likely re-purposed from a swim store. Additionally, she keeps a leather belt on her that stores her existing pokeballs- though intended for breeders, because it has nine slots instead of the normal six, she ends up just putting empty pokeballs in the additional spaces. You can never have too many, after all. {General Appearance} General Appearance: Bailey, though of average height, walks with a rare confidence gained through years of tribulations that make her appear a lot bigger than she actually is. She possesses a lean, muscular build gained through many hours of working out. She has golden blonde hair, hazel eyes, and full lips that are often pulled back in a variety of expressions. Her skin is well taken care of, but is littered with scabs, bruises, and marks. She tends to tan pretty easily, and in the past several years has tanned quite a bit. Her fingertips and palms have rough calluses from exercise. Though possessing prominent bones, it's clear that she's very active and outdoors-y. Wearing no makeup or jewelry, she can be seen as rather plain in appearance. Her clothing is obviously not top shelf in quality, but she makes it work. When moving, her stride is quick and efficient, and she tends to hold her back up straight. Usually, her hands are stuffed in the pockets of her sweatpants to fiddle with whatever happens to be in them right now- stray coins, rubber bands, lint, even pokeballs that don’t fit on her belt. Her voice is naturally an alto, but it’s clearly feminine. It naturally projects loudly, so even when attempting to be quiet it comes off as if she’s shouting. In terms of body language, she comes off as very intense- she either relaxes or focuses at 100% all the time. When happy, a wide grin cracks open her whole face, while when antsy her legs and hands tend to jitter. When mad, she tends to speak even louder and has harsher movements, but she tries her hardest to avoid expressing this emotion towards her pokemon- people, on the other hand, are another story entirely. This is mostly due to the fact that she feels incredibly responsible for her pokemon, including from an emotional and psychological standpoint. Above all, she's an open book emotionally, for better or for worse. |
{Personality}Personality: Bailey is a very passionate person. She doesn't do things in parts or halves: she either does or does not. She is rather introverted, as she prefers to spend time with her family rather than talk with other people, but ever since her father's arrest she has become cold to them as well. When angry, she tends to take her anger out mostly on herself. Though she doesn't consciously know it, her self esteem is very poor and as a result thinks that she kind of deserves all of the bad happenings that have been occurring. This is mostly because she thinks she isn't good enough. She doesn't have much of an interest in academics, but is willing to read about the things that interest her. Bailey inherited this behavior from her father and from her brother.
She tends to be impatient with both herself and others. If she can't have the results now, what's the point? This causes her to rush things that are usually better handled more cautiously. She gets frustrated when her impatience leads to negative consequences, but doesn't seem to be aware of her own impatience- which, of course, leads to more negative consequences. This behavior started immediately after her father's arrest. Morally, she tends to be rather neutral. If it's something easy she can help out with, she will, but she will generally not pick sides or go out of her way to assist/harm others. After her brother's diagnosis, she is actively avoiding human contact, making her antsy and irritable.
Bailey is sassy and rude to others. It seems to be partially intentional, as that is how she releases her anger, but the unintentional part is to put up a barrier so she can't be hurt by other people. This alienates her from others and prevents her from having friendships. Why would you hang out with someone who's always criticizing you and making you feel bad?
She doesn't seem to pay much attention to the status quo. She prefers to do her own thing, and has been this way since childhood. When it comes to laws and authority, she doesn't strictly obey or disobey. Bailey is indifferent to most authority figures, though she might listen if she respects said authority figure. Her respect is earned through actions, not words or reputation. She tends to formulate her own opinions about other people rather than listen to rumors.
If there's anything good to be said about Bailey, however, it is her resolve. Ever since she was young, she'd go absurd lengths to get what she wanted as a result of her passion. Her impatience sometimes made this difficult, but if it was something she really was interested in, then she'd be willing to wait extended periods of time for that to happen. Currently, she has been relatively stagnant in her eyes- resulting in a deep set frustration and wanderlust that has yet to be sated.

{History}History: Bailey was born to a middle class family in Tiensee sixteen years ago. Her mother, named Candela, was a shop owner who sold incense. Her father was a freelance writer named Jehan. As a whole, they didn't own any pokemon. They had a healthy, happy relationship, a six year old son, and a small one-story house at the time of her birth. The son, a joyous and energetic young boy, was overjoyed at the prospect of having a sister. His name was Matthias. As a baby, she was loud and capricious, in the sense that she grew angry, sad, and happy quickly. Her life progressed relatively normal for an infant until around age three. She had an intense interest in the geysers that dotted the area, and often liked to go see them on weekends with her father. Her father was the center of her world: she wanted to be just like him when she got older. Matthias, age nine, was developing an interest in pokemon, which he often brought to Bailey. Bailey was indifferent.
At age five, she started attending school. She enjoyed getting out of the house to do things, but did not particularly enjoy interacting with others or doing schoolwork. Bailey did statistically average in school, not showing any particular signs of genius. She had some acquaintances she sometimes saw on playdates outside of school, but she mostly preferred to spend time with her family. This behavior stayed with her as she grew up. When she turned six, her brother got his first pokemon from the trainer program- a cute little Growlithe from Mt. Quemar. His name was Max. Bailey loved playing fetch with Max, as well as taking him to see the geysers with Matthias. Though she still was intensely family-oriented, she started to open up slightly more to the world around her as she started to explore and mature. Additionally, she started learning about incenses and the basics of money from her mother. This was because she sometimes liked to stay with her mother in the shop on weekends. Though she found the concept of incense interesting, she never really wanted to pursue it for a living. To her, they were just weird smells that came from boxes she wasn't allowed to touch.
Three years later, she turned nine. By this time, she'd developed an interest in pokemon from Matthias. She wanted to be a writer when she grew up, though- her writing ability was advanced for her age due to the amount of time she spent practicing. Bailey liked to write short stories about pokemon around this time, to emulate her father. The school year passed normally until early spring. Her father didn't come home one day. Bailey thought he was having a rough day at work, perhaps, but when two police officers came to her house she grew concerned. When they informed her that he had been arrested for the use and distribution of illegal drugs, she was crushed. The person she looked up to, the person she loved, was being taken away. And she wouldn't be able to see him for a long time. But more than that, she was furious- how dare he keep that secret from his family? How dare the police arrest someone so kind? But the deepest, most keen anger was directed towards herself. Maybe if she had been a better daughter, she could have prevented this. This anger was expressed in many different ways. Bailey skipped school, got into fights, broke off previous friendships, and grew distant with her family. Most notably, this happened to her brother. Even though she doesn't realize it, it's because Matthias reminds her of her father.
This behavior persisted seriously for two years. Bailey's mother had tried signing her up for therapy, but she refused to talk to the therapist. She did not appreciate the attempt and was especially snappy for a couple weeks. A year later, she calmed down a little bit. She still acted out occasionally, but she started to let people back into her life. She also started to try harder in school, in the hopes that she might obtain her trainer's license. Due to the time she had skipped out on, though, she was forced to take an extra year. This frustrated her, but once again, a lot of the anger was directed at herself. The year she turned twelve was largely uneventful. When she turned thirteen, she managed to get her trainer's license, and was due to receive her trainer's license in a few weeks.
Everything changed when her brother was diagnosed with acute stage two leukemia. Her emotions were in wild turmoil for a week in which she refused to talk, before she grabbed her newly earned trainer's license, one of her brother's most recently caught pokemon, a Sneasel, and transferred it over to herself as a starter pokemon. She doesn't know why she did this, but deep down it was because she felt hurt and weakened by her brother's diagnosis and wanted to become strong. If her brother's condition were to worsen to the point of lethality, she would completely break down, regardless of whether or not she was in public. She is terrified of the prospect of his death- in fact, it is what made her run away in the first place. Though he did not press charges, her brother was very disappointed and is trying to contact her. Bailey refuses to answer any calls by numbers she recognizes, and ones which belong to the hospital where he is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Then she ran away to the west, towards the abandoned power plant.
Eventually, she made her way all the way up to the Safari Zone, capturing several new pokemon there and evolving Sneasel, before returning back to her home of Tiensee. The reunion at first was tearful and awkward, and through most of it Bailey refused to speak or listen when spoken to. Eventually, she found a topic of conversation she felt comfortable with- pokemon, and the new ones she had met along the way northwest. Around this time, her brother went through remission, lightening her mood significantly. About a month later, she was re-enrolled in therapy.
She decided to put her gym challenge on hold for obvious reasons, instead focusing on the pokemon she had caught- training them, roughhousing with them, and in general attempting to build a bond between them beyond using them exclusively for battle. Queen- Weavile- became restless, and arguably a bully, often picking on Bailey’s other pokemon during times of boredom. She’s also made several different ‘artworks’ around the house that she pretends not to know about when the claw marks are pointed out to her. Around this time, Bailey turned fourteen, and re enrolled in school- due to her past experiences and flight risk, however, she was placed in a small classroom with a counselor on call. The next year passed in relative peace and quiet, with Bailey having matured and regained some of her old confidence. Now, however, as she’s approaching her sixteenth birthday, she’s starting to grow restless and irritable. Perhaps its time to trek back out into the world…?
