The doorway onto the field was made of light.
Or that's how hit seemed compared to the dark interior of the tunnel leading to the arena. Josh had to fight the urge to block the lights with his arm as he emerged into the glare. Cheers arose all around him as he followed the path to the square where he was supposed to stand. Above, the sun shone down with an impressive force. It seemed the full force of summer was present today.
A ref sat in a raised pedestal looking over the field. He watched Josh carefully as he took his place on the field. With a nod, both men faced the other side of the field. The slight delay let him get a good look at the battlefield, and he frowned. It certainly wasn't going to make the battle easy. Sharp rocks and loose piles were scattered around the field, leaving one main valley-like strip in the middle. On the extreme edges of the field, seeing either Pokemon would be borderline impossible.
Still, it could be worse.
He ran fingers along the seam of the Pokeball he'd selected. Worn with use, the Pokeball was a comforting weight in his hand.
As his opponent arrived, Josh offered only a polite nod of the head to her before releasing his Pokemon. Sunlight glinted off his armor as oilskin shifted with his motion. There was a flash of light, and a massive bug type appeared, massive yellow accented pincers stretching. The Vikavolt buzzed its wings twice before looking around. Its length gave it some issue with a protruding rock, so it just took off, floating in mid air was it glared down at the opponent.
"Atirador, try to keep your range!" Josh advised as he returned the Pokeball to its clip. The massive bug type shimmied from side to side in response, but didn't look away from the opponent. Electricity crackled along the Vikavolt as dust swirled around it, stirred up by the small breeze generated by its wings.

Calista dipped her head forward, letting her long waves fall in front of her face for a moment before capturing it in a tie and straightening up again. With her hair now firmly secured, she felt ready for anything.
Except that.
Her opponent was already fairly intimidating, but what was that pokemon? All segmented and mandibled and so ready to fight. Some kind of enormous bug type she honestly wasn't sure she had ever seen before. She took the free second granted to her when the ref announced her name and city of origin to grab her Pokedex and at least look up the basics. Blinking hard as if to prematurely deter sweat from trickling into her eyes, Calista grabbed her own ball and Angel appeared in a flash of light.
She hadn't been able to quite finish her last match -- it had been called off before the Salandit had even been able to contact her opponent -- and it really showed. The dominating lizard pokemon was visibly vibrating with the need to burn off some steam, tail slashing the air behind her, jet black claws flexing. Her tongue tasted the air and she shivered whenever she caught a taste of her foe.
Calista swallowed. She was out of her league, but at the very least she could allow her pokemon to get some good exercise. "Start with Ember!" she ordered. It seemed the smartest move if her opponent was a bug of some sort. But she hadn't specified where her pokemon should go, so eager Angel took off with all the speed of a fully rested predator, and attempted to spit her ranged yellow-orange flames at the foe from a mere two feet away. Her muscles tensed under her shining skin. The fire type very obviously wanted to get up close and scrap it out rather than stay far away and blast with flame, but Calista didn't think that was the right idea.
Hopefully, they could stay in sync for as long as it took to outlast this scary-looking foe.

Josh frowned at the woman across the field from him. She was attractive, but didn't really seem the type to make small talk. She covertly tried to take information on Atirador, and he frowned at the Pokemon she sent out. He'd never seen its like. It was smaller, with black skin that shone as if wet. The buzzer sounded and the Pokemon spat out a swarm of orange flames. Josh seemed to be at a disadvantage, but Atirador had proven itself in battle.
"Atirador, use Charge Beam!" Josh ordered. The bug type buzzed, screeching as the flames impacted on it. Yellow aura built up along Atirador's flank, collecting in the pincers as it unleashed a blazing yellow beam of solid light. Electricity crackled around the Pokemon as it unleashed the attack, causing the spots on its side to glow brighter.
The sharp tang of zone filled the arena. The buzzing of the hovering bug type's wings filled the spaces between cheers in the crowd. "Aim for the taller rocks!" Josh ordered. "See if you can keep sights on that thing."
Atirador, attack shot, buzzed as it took off into the rocky mounds to Josh's right. Dust shot out from between the rocks it passed through as it took off. Though not super speedy, the Vikavolt had little trouble travelling through the miniature valleys and chasms formed by the rocky obstacles. Josh's sight of the battle was limited, but he hoped that Atirador would use the terrain to establish a firing range of sorts.
"Your Pokemon is interesting!" Josh called out. He crossed his arms, regarding his opponent. "I look forward to a good fight."Josh didn't really care either way to be honest, but he figured a little banter couldn't hurt. If nothing else, it kept the match interesting while waiting for something to happen.
OOC: Atirador's SP. ATTACK rose! Now at 214!

Hardly a second after the Ember impacted on its hard-looking skin, the insectoid foe blasted back a beam of what looked like pure electricity. Angel's jaws clamped shut, smoke curling from flared nostrils just as the beam impacted her on the torso, sending her tumbling backwards. The black, almost toxic-looking smoke that lingered from her attack faded into the air and she righted herself, turned to the climbing bug, and hissed audibly enough for Calista to hear it.
It was trying to get to higher ground. She took a long, deep breath and tried to envision what could be coming next. Pokemon battling couldn't be too much different from preparing for another kind of attack from another kind of enemy, and that was something she'd been taught about as a kid. All she really wanted to do was last long enough that the audience didn't laugh.
The guy on the other end of the field had to shout to get her attention, but it still took her a second to realise and turn his way. Her cheeks coloured slightly and she nodded. "Interesting," she agreed, turning back to Angel just in time to see the lizard let out a strangled noise of pure fury and begin to speed towards the bug pokemon resting on top of some of the taller rocks nearby.
"That's right, Angel, go for a Sweet Scent!" she half-stammered, trying to at least make it look a bit like she was in control. Angel did listen to her suggestions, yes, but the second Calista paused in making them, Angel would completely take over in favour of close up Scratching and hissing.
Again just a few feet away, trembling with the urge to get closer, Angel clambered up onto one of the shorter rocks and rose onto her hind legs, swaying her lithe body. Her scales looked like they grew oilier, and flames spilled from her grimacing muzzle, burning off the toxic chemicals she secreted and causing a sickly smoke to curl through the air towards the foe. If this worked, it would limit the foe's ability to fly away and aim potshots at her, evening the match just a little. Calista was trying to ignore the fact that Angel already looked pretty injured by that one single beam of light. She'd run on the fumes of her own desperate aggression until she couldn't fight a second longer, though.
"It looks like we have the advantage," she added as coolly as she could, with a small, almost shy smile over at Josh. She had never trash-talked before, but maybe she could get in his head. Her father had always insisted that was a viable option in any conflict, after all. An air of false confidence might be one of her most valuable weapons.

Atirador shifted restlessly on the pointed tip of the rock. Multiple legs constantly shifting, it rotated as it tried to watch Angel. The pincers opened wider to allow it a wider field of vision, yellow eyes focused on the rocks below. Its wings fluttered occasionally, adding an arrhythmic accent to the clicking of the legs on the stones.
The gentle pulsing of light coming from Atirador's abdomen made it look something like a beacon on the rock. Josh started reconsider his plan, as it seemed that Atirador was having trouble keeping track of the small lizard Pokemon. Josh caught site of it leaping from one rock to another, then lost site as it vanished behind a particularly tall crag on his side of the field. The woman gave it an order and a dense smoke started to fill the field. The odor of the smoke was so sweet as to make Josh nauseous, and he had to cover his mouth with a cloth to keep from coughing.
Josh glanced at Atirador to see how the bug type was holding up. The glow of its eyes had dimmed and it's head drooped as if it was sleepy. It started to sway as it drank in the smoke the lizard Pokemon had released. It almost looked like the bug was drunk.
Josh looked at the woman as she called back to him. "Perhaps, but advantage doesn't mean everything."
He pointed at Atirador. "Use Charge!"
The bug type shook its head, trying to shake the effects from the smoke. It blinked twice, then began to glow brighter. Electricity crackled through the air around the Vikavolt, and it buzzed its wings excitedly. The energy coalesced on its carapace, sparking bright yellow as it readied itself. "When it gets close, use Thunderbolt!"
Josh smiled at the woman. "As I said."

She was surprised to note how hard her heart was pounding, her breaths shallow, and ran her wrist over her forehead before sending the other trainer a tight smile. This was surprisingly fun, and it had only been a minute. "We'll see," she called over, a pointless response, but she wanted him to hear the chipper tone she was affecting. Maybe it would psych him out to think she had an ace up her sleeve.
The bug shifted its many legs, limbs and various extremities, and began to glow at its core in a way that she found incredibly unsettling. Shaking off her own unhelpful feelings, she watched as the smoke rolled through the arena and then quickly disappeared. She could hear squeals from some of the closest audience members as the violent scent tickled their noses, and it made her laugh.
Calista had actually come up with a rudimentary plan, but this match wasn't going to last long enough to put it into practice. She would have to pivot and come up with a whole new strategy. And she didn't really have one. "Poison Gas, get really close!"
Angel was already darting and weaving around the bug in circles, and she happily let out a screeching hiss. She leapt up and landed halfway up the tall rock, spiraling upwards and simultaneously burning off the oily secretions glistening on her scales. A darker smoke, choking and foul, spread from her body as she rose towards the foe.
Just then, the Thunderbolt was called and Calista could swear the air around her crackled and sparked with charging energy. "Oh, god," she whispered, staring out at her completely vulnerable partner out in the middle of the battlefield. "Angel, RUN!"
The Salandit paused its slow, creeping ascent and turned with a snap towards her trainer. Her flashing eyes dulled as she too realised what was about to come, and she scrambled down the rock. Crashing lightning spiked from the air and exploded onto the ground behind her, sending dirt and rubble shooting above her. "Faster!" she yelled, practically jumping up and down. More forks of energy slammed into the ground, behind her, to the left, to the right, and finally right in front of Angel. The lizard pokemon scrambled to a stop, and turned around again. Calista realised that this was the first time she had seen her pokemon tremble with anything other than the urge to destroy her enemies. The tiny poisonous predator wasn't only tired, she was ... really and truly intimidated.

The air practically split with the energy discharged from Atirador. Josh whistled at the sight, bright bursts of energy tearing across the field. Where the attacks landed, rock and sand was vaporized in explosions, sending fragments flying into the air and clouds of dust drifting across the battlefield. Atirador spread its mandibles wide in victory as it sent the smaller lizard Pokemon scurrying away.
"Don't let it get away!" Josh urged. "Chase it and use Air Cutter!" He regarded the woman across the battlefield from him and smiled at her. "You said something about an advantage?" He asked, tone light.
Atirador's wings beat twice in agitation, then it was off. Lifting off with somewhere between a controlled flight and simply leaping off the side of the rock. The air filled with a buzzing sound as the mandibles closed into their narrow configuration, giving the Vikavolt the appearance of something on the hunt. Given the reaction the opponent had to the attacks, it might not be too far off of a comparison.
The bug type passed through a cloud of the smoke Angel had created, but it didn't slow it. Wings beat the smoke into curling ripples as Atirador rounded a rock. The oily looking smoke clung to Atirador, giving it the appearance of an old fashioned aircraft falling while burning.
There was a crackling sound, and air erupted from in front of Atirador. Blades of air, glowing bright blue, ripped across the battlefield. Where they struck, pillars of dust rose up and rock shattered. Atirador moved slower than the opponent, but it did its best to try to keep up and keep the opponent lined up in its sights.
Josh smiled to himself as he regarded the sight. Once, Atirador had been a shy cowardly Pokemon. Sure, it was probably only pushing this because the opponent was visibly shaken, but progress was progress.
Of course, being able to shatter stone like it was nothing probably did wonders for self confidence.

Angel had barely scrambled to a stop before another attack was ordered.
Calista opened and shut her mouth. What was there to order? She had hoped the Sweet Scent would at least keep it close enough to keep better tabs on, but the simple truth was that the bug had access to a whole extra dimension, and that had given it a small edge against her own attacks. Which were fairly powerful, if she could say so of her own pokemon, but they had been so busy ducking and diving that they'd barely had the chance to really use any.
If she was going down, she was going down absolutely kicking and screaming.
"Run towards it!" she called. Angel watched as the air around her began to glint and glow with a new type of energy, and then wasted no time launching herself at almost full speed towards the Vikavolt. "Get ready with Ember." Her lips drew back revealing needle-sharp teeth, and yellow wisps and sparks of flame curled from her mouth. The brilliantly bright slices through the air slashed ahead of her, and then caught her right in the midriff just as she leapt as far as she could and spewed flame. She fell and rolled to the side, hitting one of the piles of debris that had been a pillar of stone. "Angel," Calista said sadly. Three or four seconds passed in silence, and the Salandit didn't get up.
The referee took a step forward, held up an arm, and then gave Calista a look that was just an inch from pitying. "Salandit is unable to battle. It looks like..." He paused for another moment, looking to Angel, who let out a low rumble and twitched in the rubble. "It looks like Josh and Vikavolt have won this round."
Calista puffed up her cheeks and then let out a huff of air. "Wow," she said, her mouth twisting into a genuine smile. "You guys are so strong. That was fun!"

The sound of the referee's call seemed to echo inordinately loud throughout the arena. Josh smiled as Atirador settled on the ground near him, shivering as if in pain. Several of its wounds had a greenish tint to them, and Josh regarded the fallen opponent. It seemed the little lizard had a bite to it.
He smiled at the woman as he was allowed on the field. "You did well. Perhaps we could meet on more favorable terms." He said, trying his best to not be gruff. She was pretty after all.
"And we are always up for a rematch."
