The Fear of Loss

The morning sun shone on the ground through the forest leaves, paving the dirt path with occasional sprinkles of sunlight. It was the type of ideal setting that may come to mind when thinking of spring. A light breeze whistled through the trees, and the sounds of scurrying Pokemon could be heard from deep into the brush besides the walkway. The air was fresh and crisp, much different than the salty sea that lie to the northeast.
Two pairs of feet trotted down the well-traveled path leaving said beach. One human, one Pokemon. With each step the left a shallow imprint on the dirt and beneath them as they made their way to the villa that lie beyond the dense forest path.
Mercury was silent, taking in the morning spring air with a smile spread across his lips. His jacket, while not removed, was open to reveal the plain white shirt underneath and show the soft yellow Mareep wool that lined the inside. His body language was relaxed, hands lightly swaying by his sides and head slightly angled downwards, enjoying the cool breeze brushing past his ears and watching his recently evolved companion with a curious gaze.
Nemui, the Kadabra who had recently found himself in a completely new body only hours ago, seemed to still be getting used to having to walk instead of being carried around in his trainer’s bag. Lucky for him it was such a nice day, even though he was separated from the familiar warmth and comfort of Mercury’s messenger bag. Every once in awhile, though, he would stumble slightly, or let out a low grunt from the aggravation of having to walk such a large distance to make it to their destination.
That destination, coming only a short way up the road, was the famous home of long passed James Firebird, a building referred to as Firebird Villa and apparently a cursed location and magnet for ghost type Pokemon, a certain type which interested Mercury due to the fact that he had never actually seen one in person.
“So, how is it getting your land legs?" Mercury finally spoke up in order to break the silence, reaching over to pat Nemui between his pointed yellow ears. The response was a disheartened sigh, the Pokemon stopping for a second to lift one foot and rub the sides of it between his slender fingers.
Mercury just chuckled and gave him a nudge, sticking out his tongue and squinching up his nose to make a silly face at his traveling companion. “Yeah, well now you know how I feel! But at least now I don’t have to carry your lazy butt around, now do I?” He teased, crossing his arms in a sort of triumphant pose, as if he had just made a grand point to be proud of. The boy was then met with a similar nudge from Nemui, who rolled his eyes and smiled slightly.
It was then that something clicked in Mercury’s head, and he really realized how strange this was. Nemui honestly didn’t seem any different, he had the same personality as always, but there was still something that felt different nonetheless. Maybe it was having a friend for so long who spent a majority of his time in two states, either asleep or barely awake, now walking around and expressing himself in all new ways. That was probably it. His best friend was the same, but now he was playfully bumping them into each other and rolling his eyes, things he could never have done before, but at the same time almost did in his own ways as an Abra.
Either way, with the Villa rapidly approaching and excitement welling up in his chest Mercury thought it better to push the thought to the side for a moment. Instead of getting himself caught up thinking about the Abra’s recent transition he went to spark up a new conversation, but not before his holocaster began to buzz with an incoming call.
The pair slowed their walking speed down from their normal pace as the trainer pulled out the holocaster, one eyebrow raising and his smile twisting to a look of confusion with his bottom lip pointed outwards. For three or four seconds he let the device continue to ring, watching it closely. Nemui’s head tilted to the side, a hand stroking the whiskers on his face as he looked to his trainer with a curious look.
Once Mercury answered the forest went back into a moment of silence, but only a moment when Mercury finally spoke up to the person on the line.
“Uh… Hey, Dad?”
