{Appearance}
Hair Color & Style: Nate’s hair is black in colour. The sides are shaved short, not completely gone but cut enough to give the sides a straight look. Longer on top, it forms an afro of tightly curled hair several inches tall. When properly maintained it looks rather neat and tidy, but Nate often forgets or just doesn’t bother going to the barbers and tries to look after it himself, often resulting in a more messed up look. It doesn’t help that his favourite pair of headphones are over the head ones, which often mess up his hair even more.
Eyes: Rounded in shape, the colour is a dark brown, with a few lighter shades swirled in giving them a richer colour. His eyelashes are thin, but his eyebrows are thick although not overly so, shaped nicely to fit the features of his face.
Clothing/Accessories: Nate often wears simple clothes. Plain jeans and whatever random t-shirt he pulls from his closet is his go to outfit. He has several pairs of the same kind of jeans, a dark wash with the material worn and torn in some places. Plain, one colour t-shirts make up most of his collection of tops, with a few band shirts or random Pokemon paraphernalia thrown in for some splashes of colour. His default shoe choice are his favourite pair of Nike high top trainers. A limited edition, red and white design with black laces. They were a present from his mother on his sixteenth birthday.
When it gets colder, Nate has several jumpers or hoodies. Most of them are just as plain as the rest of his wardrobe, with his flashiest being a red and yellow striped sweater. His most prized jacket is a black leather jacket that his father gave to him on his eighteenth birthday.
His bag is a plain blue backpack, with two small side pockets and one large main pocket. His belt has been modified, adding three spaces on either side to clip Pokeballs to. Nate also owns a pair of white, over the head headphones, which he never leaves home without.
General Appearance: Nate has dark brown skin, a square jaw and a wide, flat nose, slightly crooked from where he broke it in a fight at school. Noses don’t fare well against elbows. Everyone says he has his father's genes, the spitting image of his dad when he was his age. But his father says he has his mother’s smile. A tall and stocky build, he has broad shoulders and big bones, another trait he gets from his father’s side of the family. While he doesn’t run or work out, he explores and helps both his grandfather and father at their workplaces, so he’s gained some muscle mass, more in his arms, shoulders and back than anywhere else.
His talent for squeezing himself into small spaces has gotten him nicked and bruised more times than he can count, and he has the scars to show for it. None of them large, but small cuts that he kept picking at, little scrapes that went a bit too deep. Scars run all over his arms, face and torso. A few he’s even gotten while fishing or working with his father in the garage. His hands are large, thick fingers with bitten down nails. They’re covered in calluses, work hardened and just as scarred as his arms.
At first glance, people may think of Nate as intimidating. Wide set and tall, he can come across as mean and scary from afar. But with a kind smile, and a rich and welcoming tone, he tries his best to convey that he doesn’t mean any harm.

{Personality & History}
Personality: Nate always tries to have a smile on his face, whether he’s with his friends or his family, he tries his best to be one of the happiest people in the room. He’s incredibly chatty and will happily talk a person’s ear off if they let him. He can talk about almost anything; the latest music, that huge Magikarp his grandfather caught, a secret alleyway he found hidden between two houses. Anything and everything, Nate will be chattering away. There are times when he tries to be suave or charming, but it never really rings true and often comes off more as dorky than anything else.
Nate also loves to tell stories, the more fantastical and awe-inspiring the better. But this often leads to him bending the truth, trying to impress his friends and even strangers, weaving lies into his tales to make them sound far more daring and amazing than they really are. This habit has even started to bleed into his normal interactions, and he often lies about what he’s been doing, or what kinds of things he likes, trying his best to fit in and get on the good side of whoever he talks to. This has gotten him in trouble a good few times, especially with his father, when he gets caught out in one of his lies.
He also has an adventurous streak a mile wide, he’ll constantly explore the town and the surrounding cliffs, trying to find new hidey holes or secret shortcuts. He rarely follows directions or pathways, often preferring to know the general direction and make his own way to his destination. As a result, he has a great sense of direction, and often knows which way is east or west going by the sun in the sky, but still gets lost regardless. He’ll find the places eventually, but if he strays too far from the path it does take him a while. Even so, he’s excited to explore everything the world has to offer.
Nate has a penchant for heights, often scaling the cliffs of Amadour and looking down at the town below. He likes feeling free, watching all the people milling around like Joltik. He finds the sea breeze refreshing and often finds the same ardour in the ocean.
His relationship with his mother morphed the naiver aspects of himself ever since he was a teenager. When he was younger, he believed that everyone was perfect, that no one could do any wrong. But as his mother became more distant, his outlook changed with their relationship. It never became strained, Nate understood his mother’s reasoning, and he appreciated the fact that she still tried to be there for him. But he realised that people were selfish creatures, most of them tried to do the right thing and be good, but that wouldn’t always stop them from looking out for themselves first.
As a result, while trying not to be overly cynical or pessimistic, Nate isn’t one to trust people initially. He’ll never discriminate, or treat someone differently, but that doesn’t mean he’ll trust all people the first time he meets them. If someone appears incredibly shady, he will still be weary.
Because of his grandfather, Nate has a very collective view on how battles can work. He believes that a trainer should use all of the Pokemon they have at their disposal, using each individual creature’s attributes to their advantage and that teamwork is how you win a fight, rather than just brute force. All Pokemon, no matter how weak one might think it is, have their role and can contribute to a victory.
His family instilled his need for adventure, and he was buzzing to leave home and explore ever since he was a teenager, but his father insisted he got himself a proper education first, for when he finally decided to settle. His want simmered for years, and now that he’s free, he’s finally ready to explore.
History: Nate’s grandfather, Kayode, came to Godai from Mboki when he was young. He ran away with his young love, leaving behind his family. He set up in Amadour, learned how to work the fishing boats and started making a new life for himself. They had Nate’s father, Andre, in their late thirties. Nate’s grandmother died before he was born.
In his early twenties, Andre met Elizabeth, Nate’s mother. It was a whirlwind romance, which ended after a year. The breakup was mutual, and it ended on good terms. What they hadn’t planned on, was Elizabeth falling pregnant. She realised a few weeks after the two broke up, and although she didn’t want to get rid of the child, she knew she didn’t have the proper means to look after it. Her parents not offering her any help. As such, Andre took in Nate when he was born. His father had been the one to choose the name Nathan, and it had also been his father’s decision to give him his mother's last name, despite her protests.
Nate grew up with his father and grandfather, but still saw his mother whenever possible. For the first few years she visited a few times a week. Nate barely remembered that time, vague memories of bedtime stories and walks by the pier. As he grew from ages three to six or seven, the visits slowly lessened to once every two weeks or so. His mother way busy, she had her own job now, and he could only really see her on the odd weekend. It never really got to him as much as it should have, he was happy with his father who loved him twice as much just to make up for it.
As he got closer to his teen years, the visits went down to once a month, then once every two months until it slowly morphed into a few visits every year as he reached his mid teens. He’d once asked his dad why his mother didn’t visit as often as she used to, when he was thirteen. His father had tried his best to explain that, while his mother did love him, she had her own things that she needed to do. That, sometimes, when children are born their parents can’t always look after them, and just because he couldn’t stay with his mother very often, or she couldn’t visit as much as he wanted her to, that didn’t mean she loved him any less.
Now that he’s older, Nate better understands the situation. He knows that his mother could have just left him with his father. She didn’t need to visit, or buy him presents, but she did anyway. Whether out of some sense of obligation, or because she did still love him, it didn’t entirely matter. She tried her best and Nate appreciates that.
As he grew up in Amadour, Nate often spent his free time with his grandfather on the fishing boats. He learnt how to sail the smaller boats, and the different jobs people had on the larger trawlers. His grandfather taught him how to work as part of a team, that all the little jobs that everyone has adds up in the wider picture. All the little pieces need to fit perfectly together for everything to work smoothly.
Nate’s father worked as a mechanic, and when he wasn’t with his grandfather, Nate was spending time with his father in the garage. As he grew older, he learnt how to fix some of the basic issues that can come up in vehicles. His father also owned an old Harley-Davidson motorcycle. When he was old enough to learn to drive, his father often took him out for rides on his bike.
As he was growing up, Nate was a social butterfly. He was friendly with everyone and often made lots of friends. He always had someone to hang out with, running around the town and discovering new things.
As he grew older his sense of adventure was encouraged by his family, and he would often explore the town and find all the cool secrets hidden in the nooks and crannies. He would often go hiking along the cliffs with his father or friends. He loved to climb the cliffs and sit at the top to watch the town. He would even go out towards the forest when he was feeling particularly adventurous.
Just as he turned eighteen, Nate found an injured and stranded Remoraid on the docks, when he’d been visiting his grandfather at work. Unsure as to what to do, he’d taken the Pokemon with him to ask his grandfather. He was presented with the option of keeping the Pokemon as his own. It wasn’t exactly strange for someone to take in a sick or injured Pokemon as their own, but it had never really occurred to Nate that that was one way to befriend a Pokemon.
So Nate took in the Pokemon, tended to its wounds and kept her in a water tank in his room until he was sure she was better. It only took a week, but when Nate presented the Pokeball to capture her in, she seemed willing to stay with him. And so Nate came about his first official Pokemon, just in time for his adventures.
