My thoughts remained muddled and confused as I made my way to the battlefield. It was a simple, basic plain that wouldn't particularly provide any advantages or disadvantages- I'd have to rely solely on the battling talent of a toothless eel. I must've arrived a few minutes early, because the competition hadn't arrived yet. I adjusted my red jacket and pulled out a safari ball, pressing the button and ignoring the shouts of the crowd above as a lithe serpentine form took to the field. She raised her finned head from side to side, seeing nothing of interest, before making her way over to me.
"What, no!" I whispered. "Lily, stay!"
It was a fruitless effort.
Not a moment later and the eel had wiggled her way over to where I stood and began gnawing on my leg with a gentle trill. Thankfully her fangs hadn't grown in yet... I let loose a sigh and tried to ignore the disappointed whispers and laughter coming from the stands above. I opened my mouth to scold her before closing it. There wasn't really any use getting mad at the Huntail- she was still just a kid. Her fins wiggled happily at the attention. I could've sworn I saw her tail light up as well, but it might've been a trick of the light. Supposedly her species could light up their tails to act as a lure for prey, but I haven't seen her do it at all. In fact, she hasn't been able to hover with her aura, either. It was probably a result of her premature evolution, according to the veterinarians I talked to, but... it's whatever.
My black leggings grew damp with saliva as she continued to happily teethe on my shin. I reached down and gently rubbed her head. The eel leaned into my touch, once again flopping on the ground. Hopefully the competition would get here sooner rather than later...

There were a lot of things that Sung-Min Yoon didn't grasp as well as other people. Healthy relationships and anger management for instance. However in the realm of things she understood far more than normal people, was pageantry. She waited for her opponent to arrive first, that was step one of any big show. It built anticipation for the second arrival, and gave her a clear bar to exceed. When they merely walked onto the field that bar was set quite low. They didn't even seem to have their own theme music. It seemed like someone had missed the deadline or at least the optional instructions.
Sung-Min had not.
The synthesized beat of a pop-tune from her home country blared through the speakers after Bailey arrived and as the announcer called out her name, Sung-Min positively strutted onto the field. Dressed as she had been at the opening ceremonies, she was once again wearing the large deadly serpent around her arms and shoulders like a living accessory.
People clapped, not as wildly as they had at the opening ceremonies. It seemed in part due to a smaller crowd around this arena, and in part some members of the audience seemed less enthused by her foreign pop-music. Still playing to the crowd and trying to put on something like a show won her more people than she lost as they cheered for her when she made her way to the trainers box on the field.
Stopping on her mark with purpose, Sung brought both hands to her lips and blew kisses to the crowd as she did a slow single turn in her place before finally allowing herself to lock eyes with her opponent.
“I hope you're ready to give these people a good show!” she called out before tilting to one side and pointing one arm to the ground which allowed her seviper to slither from its perch upon her shoulders and coil itself menacingly at her side.
Sung-Min reached one hand into her pocket and withdrew a single pokéball. Putting on a show for the audience she gave it a kiss before tossing the ball towards the field with a flourish.
“Lets show them what you've got, Baby Girl!” she cheered.
In a burst of opalescent light the small bluish form of a female nidoran took shape and solidified. The petite poison type sniffed at the air and looked this way and that somewhat surprised by the crowd, but its eyes took notice of the slithering blue form across from it, and had practiced enough to know what to do. Baby bared her rodent fangs at the opponent and let out an angry screech, attempting to assert her dominance over her enemy.
“Baby, use Scratch!” Sung-Min pointed a theatrically towards the cerulean eel as she issued the command.
Eager to begin, Baby didn't need told twice as she charged across the field eager to dig her claws into the enemy.
Sung-Min sent out Baby. Baby's ability Intimidate Activates potentially cutting the opponent's attack in half. Baby attempts to use Scratch.

The instant movement registered in the corners of the eel's eyes, her entire face lit up. She released my leg from her maw and began to awkwardly slither towards the foe, who was charging towards her. The cry of the figure in front of her seemed to startle Lily for a moment, but she quickly shook it off with a childlike sparkle in her eyes. The Huntail's fins wiggled in the air, though whether it was the result of a gentle breeze or her just having fun, I didn't know.
I winced slightly as the pop music reached a frighteningly loud cadence. "Come on, Lily!" I cried out, hopefully able to reach the eel's ears. "Use Iron Defense!" Something must've registered in her ears, because her smooth skin began to glisten and gleam in the harsh lighting. It wasn't quick enough, however. The water type made a sound between a bark and a whimper as the claws of the opponent raked against her skin, the move incomplete at the time of attack.
She sneezed violently, a few of the particles landing on the mouse harmlessly, before attempting again. This time, the eel's scales took on a lustrous sheen, not unlike a polished sheet of metal, before she began to wiggle towards the mouse. When she drew closer, her jaw tensed. Wordlessly, she practically leaped towards the target, jaw open before closing viciously. I couldn't see too well where the attack landed from here, but if it did, it probably wouldn't have done too much. Lily hadn't grown in her teeth, after all. "Go get her, Lily!" I called out, before I felt my cheeks get hot. I hated being put in front of other people like this... Hopefully the two of us could end the battle sooner rather than later.
Lily's attack fell 1 stage due to intimidate! Lily got hit by scratch! Lily used Iron Defense! Lily used Clamp- half effective power due to no teeth handicap!

Her heart raced with the thrill of the crowd which cheered wildly at the declaration of the first attack. They were hungry to see combat begin, and unlike some battlers, Sung-Min at least was starting with the good stuff. There was no cautious ability hampering enemy testing game for her, she skipped that phase to jump straight into the action.
It seemed her hasty action was well chosen as the scratch attack struck home before the enemy could complete their play to bolster their defenses. She watched as the huntail's scales shimmered brightly only after the damage had been done, shoring up its defenses against future physical attacks. Then it tried to get the jump on Baby.
Sung-Min's painted lips pulled in to a theatrically sinister smile. Even as she watched the slithering blue eel attempt to grab her precious poison pokémon. She wasn't worried because she knew what would happen. They'd been training hard on this one singular move. The ultimate payback for being attacked. Sung's internal philosophy of striking back anyone that struck her had been passed on into the combat doctrine of her pokémon.
Gummy jaws clamped around a ridged ear and the trap was sprung. As Baby squealed out in discomfort and dismay, the barbs on her hide jutted outwards and sprayed powerful poison right into the mouth of the enemy that dared to treat her like prey.
“You're on a swiftly shrinking clock now.” Sung practically purred. Some people in the stands cheered, others booed.
She was putting on a display that made her a polarizing figure already. Sung-Min had to admit, she'd known she would come off as a bad guy, thanks to her pokémon preferences. The idea to play up that prejudice to work the crowd had been an obvious one, what had not been as apparent before hand was just how fun it might be.
Nidoran is hit by the weakened clamp. Nidoran uses Toxic at point blank range.

The blue eel screeched loudly, producing a sound that I didn't quite expect to come out of something so small. She twitched left and right before spitting up- not using any moves- on top of the mouse's head. I winced. Lily's pokemon food was pretty damn stinky- it might be a while before my opponent got the smell out of her fur. Lily's mouth unclamped from the foe's head, but a shimmering blue aura was left around her. The lady in front of me said that I was on a tickling clock- what did she do? I knew Nidoran was a poison type- they were pretty common- so would it be amiss to assume that Lily was poisoned? I couldn't afford to make assumptions.
"Lily- hey, Lily!" she stopped twitching for a moment. I didn't know if she was listening or not, but I took that as a positive sign. "Aqua Ring!" The eel promptly licked her own eye. A pause. Then, a watery sheen began to run down her scales, sparkling with a particular luster on top of the existing Iron Defense. The scratch on her snout seemed to fade a bit, but not entirely. "Quick, use water gun!" Of course, because nothing could go perfectly for this long, she sneezed towards the foe. Particles dislodged from the aqua ring while a torrent of water shot from her mouth and nose, but it wasn't in a condensed stream. It was in a slowly rotating vortex that was practically launched on top of the mouse. I winced. That wasn't a water gun at all. In fact, I had no idea WHAT that move was. She certainly had never used it before...
After a moment, the shimmering blue aura left around Nidoran seemed to constrict in on itself, maintaining its grip for several seconds, before slowly returning to its normal size. I inhaled jaggedly. I didn't want to give myself false hope. The ball was in the opponent's court now.
Lily was badly poisoned (1/16 of max health damage) Lily used aqua ring (1/16 of max health recovered) Lily was told to use water gun, but used whirlpool instead
Baby was hurt by clamp, turn 1 of 4 (1/8 of max health damage)

This.... this was fun. Sung-Min could get used to this. Playing the villain to a big crowd, even in a pokémon battle there was a power to it, and an identity, she felt she so often craved. Maybe she needed to look more into career opportunities that would allow her to do this again. However her mind was quickly being taken off the fun of the show and on to the fight as she smelled the rancid stink that had ejected from her enemy's eel.
Toxic had been her big plan, her go-to move. A fight involved more than a single plan of attack, Sung-Min knew that more than anyone, but on such short notice it had been the thing they'd trained most to prepare for the fight and it was starting to look like it wasn't going to work as quickly as she would have hoped.
Baby let out a squealing shriek of dismay as the crushing weight of a lingering aura pressed down on all sides, only to be compounded by a whirlpool of water that was summoned from the ground and spun her about before tossing her aside, but the crushing weight of the aura it left behind still remained. The frightened poisonous rodent wasn't sure what to do. She hadn't been in many real fights before and her own instinct was to run.
“Double Kick!” Sung's command was clear and uncompromising as it rang out across the battle field. The time for play acting and pageantry was over for the moment and only specific instructions would help her Nidoran know she wasn't alone and what to do to defend herself.
Nidoran lunged towards the blue eel and spun round on one of her forepaws at the last second allowing her back legs to face the enemy before she unleashed a flurry of frightened kicks towards her opponent in an attempt to do as much damage as she possibly could.
When her feet were no longer connecting the pokémon dipped her head down to a little pouch around her neck and her buck teeth got hold of the berry that had been stored there for her to eat swallowing it quickly to try to ease the pain of the crushing auras around her.
Baby was hit by the whirlpool. Baby used Double Kick Baby was damaged by Whirlpool. Baby ate an Oran Berry to regain some HP

Lily let out something that resembled the water pokemon equivalent of a bark the instant the kicks landed. I was thankful that she used Iron Defense earlier- had I not, I definitely would've been in a losing position. I let out a shaky breath. The eel tilted her head at the mouse as it ate the berry before turning to me expectantly. "Lily, Water Gun!" the eel paused for a moment, clearly disappointed that she didn't get a 'treat' as well, before turning back to the foe. Her throat seemed to bulge for a moment before about eight litres worth of pressurized water made their way towards Nidoran. Should it hit, it would've landed mostly on her forehead, ears, and back- it wasn't like Lily was particularly skilled at aiming attacks...
Even with that attack, I could tell that we were nearing the end of the battle. The blue-ish aura shook around the opponent's pokemon as Clamp took effect once again. Lily was starting to look tired as well. Whatever the foe had done to her, she seemed to twitch occasionally, as if she had an upset stomach. Aqua Ring flared to life around her, but it wasn't enough to heal the damage entirely. I breathed out raggedly, my breaths slowly speeding up with the bray of my heart. There had to be something I could do, but my racing mind couldn't settle on any singular thought. My fingertips twitched. I couldn't afford to panic now. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Unconsciously, I slouched forward slightly. Whatever confidence I had at the beginning of the match was gone, replaced by a lingering self doubt. I didn't belong here. I was just a shitty trainer with a stolen pokemon. Why did I think I could stand up to anyone? Lily barked, drawing my attention back to the match.
I couldn't afford to panic, but it was too late.
Lily was hit by double kick Lily used Water Gun Baby was hurt by clamp, turn 2 of 4 Lily was hurt by poison Lily recovered 1/2 poison damage w/ Aqua Ring
