"You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown — only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood."- James Tiberius Kirk Star Trek: The Original Series |
Character Name: Sonak Paetdee
Nickname: Sony | Leonard
(Self-given name)Gender: Male
Age: 26
Trainer Class: Wandering Doctor
Hometown:
Kotoba City, East Godai
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 160 lbs
Hair Color & Style: Naturally dark brown to the point of being black, Sonak enjoys keeping a rather short and simplistic hairstyle, but even that’s a bit arguable. After many years of choosing whether or not to stick with a full set of hair, the man has chosen to go in the middle - literally.
Half shaved and pushed off to one side of his head, Sonak currently dons an interesting cut. But as long as he likes it, then that’s all that matters. To the side, his bangs are short and at the very best go down to his cheekbones while the rest can be neatly tucked behind the ear. On the portion that has been shaved, Sonak trims it every now and then to keep an even and small bit of fuzz in order not to make it too contrasting to his scalp and to prevent sunburn in heavily lit areas.
Often times it may get in the way of his line of sight, but he has already obtained a habit of swooshing his head to the side to clear his bangs from his eyes. It has proved more trouble than it’s worth, but it’s all in good fun.
Eyes: Brown with black flakes around the iris, his eyes are slightly narrow in shape, resting just a few milliliters above his cheek bones, giving him a more mature expression. His eyebrows are somewhat thin for his tastes, and he constantly exercises not knitting together often in order to appear cheerful and less grouchy. Thankfully appropriately apart, the man has 20/20 vision and if anything wears his glasses just for show.
Clothing/Accessories:Although his hair is probably the most taken care of, fashion is the last thing on Sonak’s mind. He chooses to don a very simplistic and easy outfit for fear it may hinder his maneuverability for any future emergencies. Unless drastic occasions call for an immediate change of attire, Sonak prefers a sleeveless tank top with a ruffled turtle neck to keep his neck secure and warm and carefully ripped skinny jeans that bend easily towards his knees and calf areas; while on his feet he wears a simple pair of high top shoes that appear to have white hardened tips as a protection against his toes. During hot weather, this attire is perfect and most preferred for the doctor, however come cold seasons, unless he can no longer ignore the biting winds, Sonak will easily pull out a plain black hoodie that has enough cotton insulin to get him by for a few hours. Otherwise, he will be forced to make a stop elsewhere for better warmth.
Never one to be without proper medical care, the adult travels lightly in terms of his own personal collections, but what makes the majority of his weight is a first aid kit and other miscellaneous needs in order to help those along the way. Wrapped in these are water proof blankets that made of light material and are stuffed into his dark grey messenger bag. Preferably Sonak tends to make sure his pack is buckled safely around his chest in order to keep the items inside safe and sound.
Other than that, towards his left bicep, the doctor wears a securely wrapped arm band of some sort used as a last resort to stabilize blood flow of any kind should his materials fail. Around his neck, he also wears a type of necklace of his choosing that holds no other sentiment just like his silver metal ring clasped around his right index finger and a designer watch strapped to the same side of his wrist.
General Appearance: Half Djitsan and half Phuouen, Sonak has a rather oval face structure and slightly higher cheekbones than the average Godian that can be seen as somewhat flat upon first appearances. Due to his more narrower and darker pigmented eyes, he has more of an advantage towards brighter areas and can focus on a longer basis compared to most people. Whether or not it is a trait developed overtime, Sonak finds solace in this and can be seen to appear in a meditative state during long hours of concentration.
The doctor is not one to be muscular, but has acquired an athletic, toned, and healthier body overtime due to running and jumping long distances for practice during his younger days. He has an affinity towards sports and parkour but does not completely invest his time as a slight knee injury has caused him to be cautious of his steps. Because of this when he is more tired than usual, Sonak tends to walk with a very subtle limp that gradually increases the less energy he has. Otherwise, his stature is slightly slouched and not as confident in order to avoid most social interactions on the spot.
Normally, from a far or on first impressions, there’s nothing staggering - good or bad - about Sonak and he can easily be passed on as the “average Joe” in people’s mind. He doesn’t make himself known too much in the words he says nor does his body language speak to anyone who is wanting something from him. The only thing he does is constantly wear a smile on his face in order to elevate his own moods throughout the day. If anything, he’ll resist direct contact as much as possible, but an unavoidable handshake or a pat on the back here and there is not a hard task for the doctor.
If there's one thing that makes the physician excited is his affiliation to those who can speak, read, write, or immerse themselves in the Phuouen culture. To him, he considers it his closest ties to "home" and his attention will be ripped from whatever is going on to the origin of his interest. It is then that the man will make a large scene, drawing unnecessary attention to himself in innocent excitement, trying to milk as much information as possible. Once said excitement dies down, Sonak does his best to withdraw into himself in either guilt, shame, or embarrassmen.
{Personality}
Personality: Once a good for nothing boy full of violence in his fists and hatred in his heart, Sonak has turned over a new leaf - or at least, is actively trying to do so. He’s been through his fair share of a slump and refuses to go back to that time period, constantly striving to better himself day after day. He’s been successful as the different stages of life passed by him and the man has long acquired a conscience, allowing himself to understand and feel empathy, fear, and pain from the living things around him.
In short, Sonak is a confusing person; not only from the opinions of those he has ever interacted with, but he himself knows and is conflicted with his very being. There are many times in where the physician will want something, only to have obtained it, and have completely no idea what to do after that. He simply wanted this object of thought for the sake of owning it; but once the deed is done, Sonak is left in the dark to his own desires. He doesn’t quite understand what he wants in life in terms of the minor things such as happiness, materialistic goods, and a way of life, but if there’s one thing he strongly yearns, it’s the ability to set things right.
Sonak, over a span of years, has been filled with countless regrets, but despite all that, the man holds an optimistic aura around him. Needless to say, it’s heavily forced, but having spent hours on end repeating a lie to himself, the brain can only but start to believe it. For this, the man holds onto it like a lifeline and refuses to budge from the fact that “everything will be alright”. No matter how dire or extreme a situation is, the man can’t help but initially panic, but after his own self coping, he is able to see a clear stream that guides him towards the finish line. But in order to acquire that, it takes time; time that sometimes he doesn’t have. Alas, for what it’s worth, the adult can actually consider himself content - even happy with this type of thinking.
Thanks to the changing of his ways, what was once a violent person is now a borderline pacifist. To the doctor, he follows the Medical Oath of never harming a patient, however the man chooses to take some words literally. Unless they are directly a patient in Sonak’s care, he refuses to harm them in any way. But, the loophole that he has created for himself does not excuse those who are violent towards any human or Pokemon. The same goes for battling of any kind, but even then it depends on Sonak’s mood or current situation. He understand that his morals vary from time to time, and can be shady at best. He is in denial of such a thing and will continue to believe that as long as he does one good deed a day, it may make up for his wrongdoings.
Regardless, on the surface level, due to Sonak adopting this peaceful route, he has become quite the pushover and has a difficult time voicing his opinions for fear of hurting those like he has done before. Unless he’s pushed into a corner, the man will “go with the flow” even if he knows it is physically wrong. In the end, mentally, he feels he will be able to correct it through the usage of his current skill set even if they are not up to par. The doctor is friendly and sociably on the outside, but like most introverts - though he does not like labels - at the end of the day, he prefers the solitude to either himself or his Pokemon to regroup and start the day again a new person.
{History}
History: Sonak was born into a middle class family consisting of one sister, and two parents. Being the oldest and of course, being a son, he was tasked by his mother and father to carry on the burdens of many household, academia, athletic and miscellaneous tasks, leaving his sister with little to no chores to do among the family.
Though it was not placed on him until his transition into middle school, Sonak only had to worry about his athletics and academics which allowed him to soar through the ranks at a young age, toppling over his classmates and such with vigor. He was proud during those years as there were many praise that came from those around him. The only thing, however, was the lack of praise from his parents. He had tried desperately to make them proud - especially his father, but no matter what he did, it always seemed to disappoint the man. Eventually Sonak gave up. He put the secret books away - those that neither his mother nor father knew of to excel in the most simplest of tasks - and hung up many of his sporting goods in order to rebel slowly from the small family.
The boy knew he was only but an average brained child who had to work extremely hard to get where he was at. He could never reach the full potential he had like his father who had constantly boasted of his intellect and how it ran through blood except for their son. Nothing came naturally to him unlike his sister. And because of that, it caused a heavy strain between them, or at least that’s how Sonak felt. They weren’t the best of friends, nor were they the best of siblings. There was a one sided rivalry that manifested, festering in the darkened areas of Sonak’s heart as he grew older and the attention shifted from him to his little sister. He was only about thirteen when he realized everything he did was because it was expected of him. If he didn’t do it, then he would harbor a guilty conscience and no boy wanted that for those who fed and sheltered him throughout his childhood. All that went through his mind was that he was never good enough. Although the friends he made at school attempted to console him and tell him that his father was wrong, deep down Sonak knew his father was absolutely right. He simply wasn’t good enough in the Paetdee household.
Like any rebelling teenager who had no where to unleash their anger, Sonak turned to something physical - boxing, then later upped the ranks into dangerous territories such as fighting rings. His fists became the words that were unspoken to his family out of the silver lining of respect he had for them. One by one he plummeted his way through to power, and of course getting himself plummeted too. During that time he felt a false sense of freedom, and the euphoric sense to at least control his own weaknesses to displace it onto others. To him, it was therapeutic, but his way only increased his growing hatred. The teen constantly came back home at odd hours of the night, earning hardened and further disappointing glances from his parents, but that only fueled his sorrow more. It was strange to the young adult that his mother - who had always been the slightly caring one - didn’t come to coddle him like she used to. Instead for anything Sonak asked, it was met with a cold shoulder and a grunt from the woman. Never once did he consider how it was that all his activities and equipment were funded and kept in good condition. But, of course, he didn’t care and continued on his less than merry way until one day it became too much.
It was in his second year of high school that the teen went out of control. For reasons Sonak can’t remember, he had snapped against three innocent boys and beat them until they donned superficial bruises and knockouts. Sadly, it didn’t stop there and the young adult went on a rampage. Thankfully not all was physically abusive. His mouth found no filter and everything from his heart came tumbling out to classmates and teachers alike. Though he had hurt them on an emotional level for years of conversations and observing their actions, not everyone was affected. Whether or not it was a miracle or destiny from the eyes of Arceus, a clever counselor was able to pick the subtle pieces strewn in the air and arranged for Sonak to visit him for sessions in replacement to charges. It was there that Sonak finally had someone to talk to - someone to listen to him and all his insecurities throughout his life.
Anger mellowed to a low thrum, for the next few years of his life and onto college, his life was somewhat normal and passive. His relationship with his parents had not budged, and if anything stayed the same despite the incident. Sonak’s sister and parents had practically pretended that it didn’t happen. Not many forgot of the miniature explosion and those who knew him were woefully careful around him. The man felt guilty - horrible even - but he knew life came with their ups and downs. Those he had assaulted and belittled transferred out, not allowing the man to say his apologizes. But it didn’t matter; life didn’t stop for anyone.
He began to learn more of humanities and the social sciences, wishing to find out more about himself, and a way to pursue happiness. Then, as time let on, like all integrated sciences, it jumbled into his desire to pursue the medical field. Initially he had not cared for the posh and arrogant attitudes of these “saviors” but as he began to delve into the psychological aspects of it, he rapidly began to become intrigued. Changing his major, he transferred into a college specializing in his post-baccalaureate for pre-med and gained more knowledge in his area of expertise. With connections from his now impressed parents, Sonak began to pursue a license. However, like the confusing person he is, he was able get into his second Medical School of choice with mediocre grades but once he had settled and began his early internship placement, the man lost interest. What didn’t sit well with him was the amount of documentations that was required. He was unsatisfied by the corporate laws that tied into withdrawing physicians to give patients the full healthcare they needed - that and much more was unveiled. But even despite his unhappiness, Sonak thought it was a phase like everything else in his life and forced himself to stay.
But like all bad deeds that were done, karma reared her ugly head in. After his mother had called, a year later, Sonak learned of the fate of one of the boys he had once strongly yelled at. The poor soul had committed an act that allowed him to pass through to another world and left behind a letter that had been an acceptance of a reiteration from the lips of Sonak ten years ago. Severe guilt racked the doctor’s physique, filling him with sorrow and regret for what he had done. A mild form of depression soon followed and no matter what he did, Sonak was unable to continue his studies, causing him to drop out - his parents shaking their heads in once again, disappointment. The next few months were a blur to the man as he wallowed his way through the difficulties that he placed in front. Sonak was able to rise his head above the murky waters of his depression, but ultimately he felt tied down to his past, with no way out. It wasn’t until uncovering a black book that held a forgotten diary of his. It paved the road to the answers that Sonak was desperately trying to seek - “how do I make this right?” Inside was a list of names of those he had yelled at and those he had beaten even before the incident. Though it had been ten years and even more, the man now had a solidified resolve to track down these people and in some form apologize or at least make up for his actions.
Gathering his limited skillset, materials, and Pokemon that had been by his side since birth, the man set out in hopes to cleanse the names from his book in a hunt to make things right again. And hopefully along the way, if Sonak learned some more things than he would at school, then he sure wasn’t going to argue.
