Her eyes are very slightly asymmetrical with one another, which to some people makes for an unusual impression when they look at her for awhile, but generally it wouldn't be something any could put their finger on. It's quite rare for people to look at her for more than a few moments in any case.

Personality:
History: For better or for worse, Corentine’s background was highly varied. At multiple points, she could just as easily have not came to exist; perhaps for her family, that being the case would’ve been more convenient in eventuality with everything considered. Not that she would have that said to her, but the lack of interest beyond interest in her responsibilities…

Anyways. Her father, Giovanni Serritella. He was of Luctanguis, a proud and forthright man. His father, supposedly, had a position of great import and influence within the Franciscan Church. But at least with his daughter, he was always rather coy about what that entailed, and Corentine had very little interest in hearing of it. His childhood years were - surely must have been - during those in which a seemingly unending deluge of scandals savaged the Church. Corruption, dirty money. Disgusting abuses, the victims quieted under threat of excommunication, and in some cases even more… literal, more physical punishments used to intimidate and barter their silence. As with any scandal, some of those things written of then may have been spurious. But of course, the overwhelming majority were not, not that much could be known of which was which to this day; given that the Church closed ranks and closed its doors to let, they hoped, the outrage pass.

This must’ve been Giovanni’s upbringing. Her father was no ‘soft man’, but it was understandable he didn’t wish to speak much of the details. However, his mother had disappeared in mysterious circumstances during this time; his father, soon after. The status of the Serritella name naturally evaporated almost overnight - the sizeable inheritance did not, in spite of the best efforts of vultures disguised as ‘advisors’, ‘family friends’ and the like. Giovanni was young then, but he was his father’s man - any property he could clutch onto he did, and he was the quickest to react in the chaos. His brother and sister were both left with relative scraps - he swiped the lion’s share of that fortune and left immediately for Batière with the intent to see it grow further.

Tragedy doesn’t seem to afflict a rich young man quite as much as it might anyone else. Batière was a similar place, quite dominated by status and sensibility (especially back then). Nonetheless, Giovanni had the language, a kind of charisma, and he had money. Swiftly wheezing himself work (or perhaps non-work) as a kind of ‘cultural advisory-diplomat’, it proved a good way to lend his name some credibility while he busied himself worming his into any businesses he could. It was good, but it wasn’t quite enough to sate his grasping desire - partly for more wealth, but he was already rather stinking rich, even moreso with no dependents. What he wanted was the knowledge that he had moved somewhere the culture called him an outsider, and nonetheless ‘won’ there. He wanted dominance of an industry, but by his time the period of rapid social mobility in Beliae had mostly settled - the nobility’d seen their coffers run empty and’d hastily married-off their sons and daughters to the emerging giants of industry, thus renewing the cycle with them still having a place ‘close enough’ to the top of the pecking order, for this generation at least.

So he needed a name, a marriage. He’d previously had little interest in it, and Giovanni was far from a charmer in the romantic sense, even if he did have a sort of… aggressive charisma for making deals. Still, once he had a stage in his plan, he’d chew at it like a dog with an old bone - researching the high city’s families in great depth. One quickly stood out to him - the Goudeaus, an as-yet pure upper-class name whose fortunes were rather flagging, but they’d stubbornly refused all suitors thus far. Their eccentricity was that the family’d recently, collectively, converted to Franciscan Arceism (at what was still probably one of the most foolish times to), and were acting as purest little followers of the faith - generally annoying those they associated with. In any case, they wouldn’t consider anyone who was not a card-carrying Arceist, never mind the wealth.

It was… amazingly fortunate for Giovanni. With his direct connection to the Church hierarchy - or so it could be claimed - and his writing a great song and dance of his piousness, he was able to organise a meeting within the week. Their heiress, Jeanne, however, did not prove quite as he’d expected (once they were finally left alone save for each other’s company, that is). She was clearly an intellect, firstly. He’d come prepared for hostility, or perhaps even a pearl-clutching monologue about her chasteness, and how she wasn’t prepared for that to be ‘ruined’. Instead Jeanne was profoundly bored, with him in particular. Forays into polite talk and deeper conversation alike withered in a few sentences, and Giovanni realised rather awkwardly that in spite of all the reading and asking he’d done of the family name and their members, he’d heard practically nothing of Jeanne herself.

And Jeanne Goudeau wouldn’t offer-up any insights of her own. Of all the unfriendly meetings Giovanni’d sat through in his time, the hour-and-a-half reception in the underused drawing room was the one to finally test his patience too far, shortly before his time would’ve been up, he raised his voice -

‘Arceus, a Geodude’d bleed before you spoke more than four straight words! I know not if you’ve taken some holy vow of non-communication, but I couldn’t give a damn about this two-bit faith either way.’

That was only moments before the family matriarch returned, face failing to conceal her hopes that something might’ve come of the time between them. Jeanne had an eyebrow half-raised. Sounding slightly amused, she wished him well and proposed they should meet again soon.


The lapse in control sewed the seeds between. Seeds if not of something ‘real’, then an arrangement which made good sense. Slightly more than a marriage of convenience, as Giovanni and Jeanne soon found they had a similar wit and low-key disdain for tradition. But mainly, Giovanni wanted his status, and to be seen not as growing older and with no romantic involvements - that was more than enough to set tongues wagging. Jeanne’s nightmare was simply to be shackled by her family to some sanctimonious creep from the Church, or living at home as the dust and dirt continued to gather on the silverware as the help deserted them. In these conditions, (even) Giovanni Serritella didn’t seem so bad a fate. They were soon married, taking the name Goudeau-Serritella, and Giovanni wasted no time in tightening his grip on the arts trade of Batière. Jeanne fell pregnant not a year after, which was manna from heaven for her relatives, but was not welcome news to either parent.

The conception’d been a mistake, and the pregnancy proved highly traumatic. Giovanni paid for the best doctors in Beliae and even a famed specialist from Mezaoto to wait on her practically hand and foot. The embryo had first to be relocated, and then the child had to be born very prematurely by Caesarean.

The family name, already restored to high position, now had their heir.

Yet almost as soon as Giovanni’d finally began to known Jeanne, she was quite lost. Not dead of course, but… her brief wit was replaced by sarcastic jabs or by nothing at all. Even though she’d considered her upbringing quite horrid, that’d been utterly trumped by her suffering of the last few months. She didn’t want to think about it, nor about the son. She resolved not to speak to most of her high-society friends save for the most old and (in her words) wretched, bemoaning the scars on her body.

As with past tragedies, Giovanni dusted himself off and returned to his business soon enough. Family life had seemed almost nice for the brief time it’d been present, but if he couldn’t have it, he would easily live without it. It hadn’t been among his desires to begin with, after all. The son was left to the help, he would need worry for nothing. Giovanni organised the best carers and tutors in the land to manage his upbringing. The boy would only see his parents twice on most days, at their lavish mealtimes, but even as a child; in the case of his mother, that quickly became once, then often no times at all. The boy spent most of the time poking at the spread with his silverware.

The boy was disappointingly sullen, although he received bright reports from those tasked with teaching him (him particularly enjoying learning other languages). Giovanni tried almost everything he could’ve and certainly much more than he should’ve to goad the boy into a response. He wanted a challenge, he wanted to be questioned, as he’d always done at that age. Nothing. So he fired and replaced the tutors (with those that, from his brief consultations, seemed to tote more ‘backbone’) and focused again on work for much longer than before. Years passed, in fact. And the next time Giovanni stooped to goad his now ten-year old son, his son told him that he should’ve been a girl instead.

Giovanni was massively incensed. It was by no means the insubordination he’d been expecting, so he left the room on the spot - out again went his (covert, but insistent) messages and payments demanding the foremost psychiatrists and experts from Beliae and other places come at once. They spoke with the boy (Giovanni, listening to some of it, was surprised by how conversational he seemed with them) and examined him at length, quickly concluding he should respect his progeny’s wishes. This wasn’t a favourable answer for Giovanni, who scant respected anyone. However, he was also aware that he’d paid a lot of money for these people’s ostensibly-expert counsel, a lot to then ride roughshod over. It didn’t escape his mind that with Jeanne’s attitude nowadays, the boy was the only heir his legacy could have. He had more than the power to push him down here, but if he did that, he could be left a dysfunctional heir. Or perhaps no heir at all.

So, this was the understanding under which Corentine was welcomed to the family. Not acceptance from Giovanni, but a reasoning that he needed to make a sacrifice in here so as to be able to use her reliably later. Jeanne was so disconnected by now she’d hardly heard until it’d already been decided upon, seeing as her husband was ‘supposed’ to be the knowing Arceist of the two. Apart from apathy, the only thing she gave her child then was a reminder that Corentine was responsible for the scars which’d ruined her figure and her social life - pain, she said, that Corentine would never have to face, and yet she dared to think herself the same one day.

Giovanni spent most of the next six months attempting to fire-fight in the social circles he’d deftly flitted in. This was Corentine’s fault, naturally. Almost since he’d came to Batière he’d been despised by so many, but previously he’d been uncannily impervious to scandal other than old rumours about how he’d came with a small fortune to begin with. Now though, high society gossip had real meat to latch onto. Admittedly, he knew the shame would’ve been no less if it’d emerged he was ignoring doctors’ advice and risking the health of his legacy; but a thrusting, hyper-masculine businessman and patriarch like himself, being unable to rear anything more than a… sickly, failed boy who wanted to pretty themselves up rather than face ‘reality’.

In the end, Giovanni admitted defeat.


With no notice at all given to anyone he owed wages or materials (naturally), he announced the family was moving afield to seek new challenges, but the real reasons were far from a mystery. They left in the very early-morning through private transport, this time to Grathfreith. It was almost as far from Beliae and indeed Luctanguis as possible without language barriers, after all.

The family name was simplified on arrival to Serritella, seeing as the Beliaean heritage was no longer required, Jeanne indifferent as always. The new property Giovanni had arranged was a severe downsizing compared to Batière - partially because of lost investments, mainly because he didn’t want to attract too much attention with the local elite before he was settled. Corentine struggled to adjust for awhile, but she wouldn’t complain. The place was still palatial by almost anyone’s standards, but with the only reference level she had, well. She was quietly stunned by how quickly she could go from one end of her house to another now, wondered how she’d be able to entertain herself. The help’d also been cut down to size - the previous head of staff at their residence in Batière had been a low-end noblewoman herself; now though, no matter how much she paced around the house, she could only find a mother and her daughter who spoke in an unplaceable way between themselves (the first time the mother'd seen her watching, she'd greeted her by her name in very difficult-to-understand Beliaean, something Corentine had never heard before - unsure of what to say, she'd run away at the time). Only one tutor came to visit her now as well... a craggy-faced old gentleman whose old suit coat reeked of mildew (he did quickly win her over, but she spent less of her time of study thinking about history, more of it thinking whether there might exist a polite way to suggest he wash the coat. Or better still, burn it).

Boredom. It was something she hadn't had much experience of, not prior to then. It occurred to her that she'd hardly ever left the house (and expansive grounds) she'd spent her entire childhood in... she felt an uneasy stirring of regret about that; but really, there'd been no need to. A dozen adults and many more Pokemon she knew, every entertainment she could’ve wanted were held inside. It was different here - her father, he may not have stated it outright, but Corentine understood she was implicitly forbidden now from wandering outside. And if everyone here talked like the help, what could she possibly do out there, anyways?

The main reason they’d left was her, and all the things others’d said of her. She was more than old enough to understand that, so she spent the first month or more keeping obediently quiet, prodding with a spoon at the weird, stodgy brown stews the mother - along with some strange Pokemon which looked like a two-toned Ursaring, and caused a good twenty minutes’ racket each evening pounding the meat flat - seemed to produce for them to eat most nights. Giovanni, on the contrary, had regained a lot of his old ‘spark’ - they’d been stagnant and with nothing to strive for in Batière, he bemoaned; that and there was a great deal of money to be made here, supposedly. Corentine was relieved to see her father
