Colin squinted into the distance, his pale, caesious orbs straining to see what lay beyond the steep slopes of Mt. Quemar. He could feel the heavy heat from the sun’s ray beating across his broad shoulders. By now, damp spots soaked though his clothing and if Colin didn’t know any better, they would soon leave yellowish stains on his shirt. It also didn’t help that a trickle of sweat dripped down from his forehead and stung his tired eyes, as if it wanted to emphasize his already sweltering situation. ’Of course,’ the explorer mused, ’no heat is gonna get me beat!’ He shook his head, chuckling at his terrible rhyme. It had been a while since he was here – if he was here at all. Technically, Colin did come to the volcano plenty of times, however, it was always as a tourist. When he was seven, the young man recalled the days his parents would take him on that tour. The guides always rambled on and on as they circled around the base of the gargantuan rock. For someone who was only seven years old, such a sight was amazing... for a mere fifteen minutes. After that, all Colin wanted to do was play on his portable gaming console while his body swerved alongside the same motion of the tour bus. In hindsight, he should’ve been listening to their monotone explanations. It wasn’t like Colin had a poor memory, in fact he remembered the specific colours and the smells of the rock, especially the hint of sulfur emitting from the volcano. However, ‘why’ was the question and it was without a doubt the tour guides would have explained it, if Colin listened. Oh well. To be fair, the man underwent specific training for months for this trip. He was in his prime – or so he thought. That’s what the textbooks say, and hell that’s how he felt. Having grown up with eczema, Colin knew exactly what it meant to always be physically uncomfortable, so seeing how his smooth skin was only mildly irritated and bumpy thanks to the heat, his current situation wasn’t too bad. A familiar rustle snapped the man from his thoughts and once again Colin felt the lightweight of the brochure in his moistening hands. The same eyes that stared into the distance had to readjust themselves to read a single phrase that was the sole purpose for Colin being here.
YOU THERE! YES, YOU! Looking for HAPPINESS? It’s just a TIP TOP away! Find it at the TOP of MOUNT QUEMAR. You know you want to!
|
The gigantic lettering took up the entire first page, almost as if the letters were screaming off the corners. Naturally, since the whole point of the advertisement was to catch people’s attention, it sure grabbed Colin hook, line, and sinker. If anything, something about the bolded words hit the wanderer a little bit too close to home, but more specifically it was a simple word. Happiness. What exactly was that? For the last decade, Colin had immersed himself in articles, books, researches, conferences, and much more trying to objectify a feeling so abstract. Happiness came in many different forms - anyone knew that, even Colin. However, like any scientific exploration, there was always an answer. Though he studied the art of psychology in various forms from cognitive to sociocultural, no single field could give him an answer that had just one thing in common. Granted, relativity and subjectivity was the answer, but what kind of answer was that? It simply raised more questions than anything else. Colin huffed, the bubbling bits of annoyance slowly creeping up his throat. Throughout the years the man had seen happiness vary from person to person, and the joy that lit up their faces always made Colin's stomach flutter. It didn't matter if the connection between him and the other party were romantic or platonic, he simply relished in another person's elation. Having seen all of that, Colin gradually came to ponder about his own happiness. It was clear the same level of amusement he had didn't cause any similar bodily reactions whenever he did something for himself. Such a feeling frustrated the man; he too wanted that same elation, but the question was how? What was worse - which has plagued the man's mind since he was young - was the ill sensation of selfishness. Under no circumstances did Colin ever want to come across as opportunistic or make the other party feel as if he used them; that would be blasphemous! The thought alone gave Colin a sense of nausea. The explorer shook his head, clearing the retched thoughts away. He had come to Mt. Quemar for one reason and one reason only. The brochure clearly promised happiness, and Colin was going to find it if it was the last thing he ever did. He spent the latter half of his life in search of this, gathering every physical, emotional, and spiritual tools to mesh them all together. His schooling and workouts would not be put to waste here! Colin turned to his quiet partner, the high sun illuminating her feathers into a blanket of white, and smiled. Their eyes met, hope contrasting determined. Wordlessly, the Togekiss spread out her wings, casting a large shadow over her trainer's own towering form. She glided into the air, her nose pointed forwards, the way up the winding trail. Colin followed underneath. Step by step, he heard the crunch of pebbles below his heavy boots. There was only one direction to go and it was around the bottom of Quemar and all the way up. Naturally he couldn't go to the absolute top due to the lack of a gym badge, and no business in their right minds would allow such a thing! Dangerous Pokemon lurked about blah blah - Colin knew that. If one squinted, like the hiker had done earlier, they could see a tiny flag at the halfway point indicating the goal. It was still fairly high, enough to see all of Tiensee Town below and beyond. Besides, according to the reviews online, no one seemed to be disappointed. The chances of Colin being disappointed were little to none - or so he hoped. Word Count: 1,050 | Edit Reasons: Butt

A stray pebble fell over the path’s sides, every tumble it took causing an echo to shatter the ear ringing silence. The wanderer trudged on, grateful for the large shadow Tasa provided. It was a hot, blistering day, and the blurry visage Mt. Quemar had to offer was not doing any favours to the trainer’s dry eyes. Thank Mew for his choice of clothing and thank whatever other Gods out there that allowed humans to discover breathable clothing attire. He tugged on his tight gradient shirt and allowed a saddened exhale. The memory, although not unwelcomed, did cause a slight twinge in the man’s heart, contorting Colin’s already animated expressions. He missed Mira, he really did. There were times where the graduate regretted immediately dropping out of the program. Yes, he properly finished up the year, but that horrible thesis he decided to work on – what the fuck was he thinking? How did he let his friend influence him so? His parents had done an excellent job in building their son’s mental and emotional wellness, and to be frankly honest, Colin believed him to be fairly “normal” compared to all his other peers. Hell, he was well-adjusted, not that self-deprecating, and anytime he did experience any setbacks, it wasn’t too hard to get back on the horse. Colin absolutely loved psychological and philosophical discussions; there were times where he would stay up hours until sunrise talking about it with his current partner at the time. The fact that the world always had an answer in even the most impossible moments made every struggle worth living. He thrived on seeing the smiling faces of his classmates, friends, and family – that’s what he lived for! That’s what happiness is, isn’t it? So why did he struggle on her question so much? “No, no I don’t think I do get it Mira.” He spat, lips initially a straight line now turned into a full blown pout. But that’s why he was here, at this exact moment, walking up the winding path on Mt. Quemar, was it not? The pursuit of happiness. Gods, he wanted that. He fucking wanted that. Colin’s fists tightened at the missed opportunities, blood pulsating around his veins. Why couldn’t he smile like Mira? Why couldn’t he look like that? The trainer bloody saw the metaphorical stars lit up her honey brown eyes, and every stress and crease she had for the last few years seemed to all melt away. It was as if he could see torrents of warmth wash over her body, as if she oozed out the best memories in the world. However, even that frustrated him even more. Why the hell was Colin, who knew he had everything – great parents, a great life, considered societally normal by every single textbook – want more? How selfish was he? Inside, the trainer felt horribly greedy. There Mira was, experiencing happiness when she had so little, and there Colin was emitting succubus-like fingers of envy. Come on, he had everything why was he so selfish to ask for more? Colin stopped and looked to his sides, taking note of the burnt sulfurous smells from afar. The lush grass that took root into the nutritious soil from Mt. Quemar thrived and extended along the winding path. From a distance, it was easy to see the climb getting steeper and steeper. At least a couple of hours had passed by now and the hiker took note that they were at least three miles in. However, the look of scenery wasn’t what the man had an eye out for. Taking note of the simple sounds of Pokemon cawing or jumping from every crevice of the mountain, the real beauty was the lack of any other humans. The man let out a delighted sigh, the tips of his lips curving upwards. Now, it wasn’t like the trainer disliked people, in fact, the opposite was true. He liked them, to an extent, but his mother always told him that in the end, if one couldn’t stand their own thoughts in silence, then that was an issue. ’No issue here.’ mused Colin as he stretched his arms up, his eyes flickering to his Togekiss who had taken a liking to hover aimlessly above. This was one of those moments where he could appreciate the sweet smell of the grass and admire the crumby exterior of a mountain. “Welp, forgive me little creatures, but I can’t miss a perfect moment like this,” the hiker took in a deep breath, his chest tightening as far as it could expand and – “AAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!” Tasanee jolted at her trainer’s random yell, but after a few seconds of smoothing out her feathers, the Togekiss floated back down. If the dual-type could roll her eyes, she would have. Instead, Tasa nestled onto a prickly, brown bush and pulled her wings closer to her crown. “AAAHHHGGGHHHHHHH!” heaving out another outlandish yell, the man cracked a grin. The air in him depleted in a flurry of rushes at each succession of his shouts. Admittedly, such a display was unruly, but honestly who the hell cared? Colin felt great! He could almost feel laughter bubble up from the confines of his belly. “AAAAHHHHHHH!” His own lungs screamed for oxygen just as the last bit left his pleural cavity, and Colin would not have wanted anything less. He took in one more breath – just one more yell, he thought – to have his own last word, but before the collection of vowels and constants could leave his throat, the wanderer jumped nearly ten feet off the ground at a piercing shriek. “SKRREEEEEE SHIII EEEEE~” Almost immediately, Tasanee leapt from her resting place and landed next to her trainer, the feathers on her back raising in defence. Her hardened eyes scanned the area just as focused as Colin himself as the two prepared for some kind of ambush. When they could see nothing but the burning of smoke from the volcano above and innocent critters passing by, a look of doubt crossed the duo’s expression. You rolled a Trainer Encounter!!! Character Name: Zac Talbot Gender: Male Age: 23 Trainer Class: Mad Lad Personality: Zac here is quite an odd, mad lad. Though he is one of few words, if he were ever pressured into talking, people may find his words rather... explosive. Speaking of explosive, Zac absolutely loves the chaos of everyday life. However, to most people who don't quite know him, it would be difficult to guess. On the outside, Zac is a calm man, who appears fairly charming. He has a way with words that can often allow people to defend the guy, or even excuse his sometimes random behavior. However, once a person begins to become closer to the man, there are a few oddities that can be seen, but more often than not, not a lot of people stay to find out. If Zac were to describe himself, he would consider him to be a simple person - who rarely needs anything other than his Pokemon. He is in no way outside the realms of society, but considers him a follower of rules in order to "blend in" as he understand humanity's need for society and peace. It is only when he feels threatened - by whatever reason appeals to him currently - that he feels the need to lash out. Despite hurting others along the way, he will always find a way to victimize himself and justify his behavior to the point where he has created toxic environments for others in the past, yet it is still difficult to pinpoint him as the rotten apple. Zac genuinely sees nothing wrong with his behavior, but rather just a product of society. He simply is and merely wants to do what he wants - after all, we all only have one life to live, so at least make the best of it right? But of course, to Zac, there are rules and there are limits, but when it comes to him, what exactly are they? What a confusing person! Pokemon |

Nini
{Personality} This fiery girl is seriously awesome - or at least that's how Zac sees her. In short, she is an insanely spoiled pup who loves her master to the max! If she had it her way she would cuddle him and drown him in fur for all she has done for him. However, Nini can be fairly hot-headed and jump to conclusions. She thinks she's good at reading other humans, but if there's even the tiniest of maliciousness in someone's aura, she'll pounce!

| Igny
{Personality}Igny here is quite the little shit. Similar to the traits of his trainer, Igny absolutely thrives on chaos and misery. Someone, somewhere needs to be suffering. It could be from something as little as a splinter, or even watching an entire forest go a flame – Igny loves it! Perhaps it’s due to his type and nature, but sometimes he takes things a bit too far and tries to push the boundaries. More often than not he’s caught trying to cause some pain or suffering to his family, but luckily Zac is there to stop him… or does he?

{Personality} Oh what do we have here? Is this lil fella also a chaos causer? Yes he is! Often found buddying up with his brother, Igny, Flomo loves to see himself as a supporter or assistant to his older brother. To be more specific, Flomo is doing his best to learn everything clever – in a very bad way – from his role model! This guy doesn’t have much of a personality yet, but he’s working on it! So far, he is easily impressionable… but as long as it’s Igny. Perhaps if he meets someone like Igny, Flomo might want to copy their personality to, but as it stands right now, he’s happy being Igny #2.

{Personality} Recently bought from someone else, Lapsus knows exactly what she was meant for – cleaning up her trainer’s mistakes. Naturally, being the only water type, it was easy for her to understand her role almost immediately. Although she may seem to be steadfast in her loyalty to Zac, deep down, she wants nothing to do with these creatures. They have horribly conflicting personalities. Where her “family” members would jump head first into action, Lasus rather wait and watch until making the right move. She understands her place as a mere tool, and is perfectly content of being used as such. Lapsus has little ambition and when things are all said and done, she would like nothing more than to return to her Pokeball and live out her days in solitude. Most would say she is lonely, but the Wingull would easily argue back that just because she’s alone, doesn’t mean she’s lonely.

The first thing the man felt as he rose from the sweet slumber of sleep was the sun’s warm rays tickling his cheek and the sound of the curtains swaying back and forth from the open windows to his side. Colin took in a deep breath and slowly opened his eyes, allowing himself a few beats as he waited out the blurry visage to. He could feel the sides of his eyelids crack in anticipation, taking in fresh movement after having been closed for so long. Colin didn’t mind. He simply drank in the quietness of it all. Just below his chin, the soft pillow gave way under the man’s weight, shaping across his unshaven stubble.
What greeted his view caused the man to smile. His heart warmed at the thought of just how lucky he was for this single moment. For just one, mere, miniscule moment, it all felt right.
”Good morning, Mira,” he whispered, soft breaths causing the flecks of dust to dance around the couple. He carefully reached out to brush the sleeping woman’s brown locks from her face, revealing a peaceful, serene look. Lush eyelashes fluttered; first it was slow, but in between recognition back to the real world, the woman stifled a yawn before looking up.
Hazel eyes locked on sky orbs, Mira released a subtle scoff as she rolled her eyes. Resisting the urge to bat her husband with a free pillow, she turned away in a huff and instead, turned her hand over, admiring a certain glistening band wrapped around her ring finger.
”Gross,” she mumbled not before a tiny smirk lit up her features.
Colin feigned a hurt look, eyes sharply glued on his wife’s face. ”Hey now,” the drawl was almost teasing, though he made sure to keep it under wraps, ”you don’t wanna look at my handsome mug? I’ll have you know I was the fairest in all the land.” He placed his hand over his heart and puffed out his chest.
”Oh please!” Now it was officially the pillow’s turn to fly across the bed, right into Colin’s head with a loud smack. Mira climbed out of their bed and jumped right onto her feet. Once again, her husband just had to say the most ridiculous of things – in the morning no less! Well, four years of marriage allowed the suffering woman to easily handle such a situation. Waggling her finger from across the room, the woman released an exasperated laugh, ”No, you know you’re right. You are the fairest in the land, to the point where I had to rescue your stupid ass from the tallest tower!”
Without missing a beat, Colin tilted his head back and placed the back of his hand right above his forehead. Stifling a large grin, the man cracked an eye open below his palm and announced, ”My hero!” before erupting into a fit of laughter, hands now clutched at his sides.
Mira watched her husband’s amusement ripple throughout his broad shoulders and down to his kicking legs. Normally she would have joined in the enjoyment, but today her smile faltered, and a sense of guilt stirred in the midst of her gut. Surprised, Mira took a moment to look at her left hand, and for the first time since their marriage there was a gnawing feeling clutching at her throat. What the heck was this feeling and why?
”Mira? You okay, love?” concern laced Colin’s words as he carefully removed the blanket and walked over to his wife. She appeared to be in a catatonic state. He was positive his joke wasn’t that bad – sure, his jokes often sucked like most dad jokes did, but this time their teasing was something they did every morning. Maybe it was something else he did the night before? Even if it wasn’t, perhaps there was something he could’ve prevented. Colin reeled in the events, his head pulsating at each tiny detail. Yesterday was nothing spectacular. All they did was go out to dinner, watch a movie, and come back home to cuddle on the couch. It was domestic bliss. As long as Mira was happy, then Colin was more than happy. Sure, they didn’t always see eye to eye on a lot of things, but he would do anything to make sure his wife was comfortable at all times.
Today was no different. He’d apologize nonetheless.
Titling Mira’s chin up, the couples’ eyes met, but before Colin could reassure whatever ailed her, Mira pushed his hand down and turned away. She pushed her hand close to her heart and spun the wedding band until it burned across her finger. Though the man eyed this, there wasn’t much he could pick up on her actions. Clearly it was worry. Maybe it was –
”Mi-“
”Colin,” Mira spun around to meet her husband eye to eye, this time unflinching as if she was searching hungrily for an answer. Licking her lips, she reached out both hands and laid it across her husband’s tense shoulders.
”Are you happy?” her breath hitched and caught itself against her tongue. Once again, Colin could see the hunger in her eyes, but hunger for what – was the question. Maybe this was –
”Colin, I need to know. Are you happy?” There was a sense of urgency this time, her gaze held steady, but Colin’s was stating to waver. He could feel it; it unsettled him, but alas the answer was clear as day.
”What kind of question is this Mira?” the man chuckled, his own gaze softening. What a silly question, yet the answer was so painfully easy. Why all the tension? Colin reached out a hand to cusp his wife’s shoulder only to be rebuffed by a shrug.
”I’m happy as long as you’re happy.” Colin beamed an earnest smile, hoping for the same reaction. ”You know that Mira.” Hopefully this would comfort her, after all it was the absolute truth.
Hazel eyes immediately veered to the right, towards the door. Although the man followed her lingering gaze for a moment, he returned just in time to catch a glimpse of a strained smile. Something felt wrong. Colin couldn’t put a finger on it.
”I see…” Mira stated and tiptoed to kiss her husband on the cheek, just like they did every morning. Without looking back, the woman left the room, the click of the door breaking the tension between them. Was he the cause of that look? Maybe he wasn’t doing enough? Perhaps he should try harder. What did she even mean? Of course he was happy. As long as Mira was happy, then by all means, so was he. Was he not expressing this enough?
Colin frowned.

Tag Trainer Profile Ye Xiu
Nickname: Kit Gender: Male
| Age: 26 Trainer Class: Traveler Ethnicity: Djitsan | Phuouen
|
Height: 5’7” Weight: 158 lbs
|
Hometown: Dianette, Central Godai

{Physical Details} Hair Color & Style: Ye prefers his hairstyle in the most natural state it can be – black, soft, and short. Although sometimes the man enjoys stylizing his hair, he is always found with a short style with minimal amounts of gel frayed at the top of his head. At times, Ye prefers it spikey with his bangs mixed towads the top of his head, and his side burns trimmed as much as possible. There’s not much else the man does, and there would be no Mew given way he would ever dye his hair.
Eyes: Despite his age, the trainer’s eyes are quite large, resting just above the cheek bones in a wide, almond shape. His eyebrows are also somewhat thick, but of course, since Ye enjoys a bit of manscaping, his eyebrows are neatly trimmed with very little hair towards his eyelids and forehead. His eye colour, however, is what the man is most proud of. Ye’s iris’ are a light, honey brown with black pigmented flakes circling the pupils.
Clothing/Accessories: Ye is not a fan of extravagant or brand name clothing, often opting to don a simple shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Reflective of his attitude towards life, most of his clothing is old, but clean in order to not make him look completely like a slob. There are times where his closet has an array of graphic tees, but otherwise, most of them are in solid colours with very minimal designs. The trainer only enjoys one kind of jeans and they are always the same colour, but in multiple pairs: blue jeans with a straight cut at the ankles. Ye’s sneakers, however, are his pride and joy. Although he took only two pairs for his journey, the rest of his expensive collection remains at home. In terms of accessories, Ye surprisingly does not wear even a ring or a watch of any kind. Ignoring his own shoe collection, Ye believes that the world doesn’t need man-made designers, especially in nature.
General Appearance: Because of his large cheeks and constant smile, Ye Xiu is sometimes picked on due to his “babyface”, but the man takes it in stride, glad to be able to keep his youth around him even to this day. Despite his rather short height compared to other Godians, the young man makes it up for always making sure he is moving around and not stuck sitting around. Prior to his adventure, Ye was always at the gym building and toning his muscles. He used to have pale skin but spending time in the light has made it quite tan. The results of this and the gym are a decent posture and a confident walking gait. At times, he can be a bit vain, but it’s not something that comes to the forefront of his mind. In a room, the trainer doesn’t turn eyes, in fact he can often be overlooked by others, but he is perfectly satisfied to be in the corner of a room with a smile and a nice drink.
|
{Personal Details} Personality: Ye is arguably one of the most laidback people in all of Godai – or at least that’s how his friends see him, not that Ye would be one to deny these facts. Described as a “chill” person, the trainer completely encompasses this in both the best and worst ways possible. Whenever tensions arise, especially between two individuals or in a group setting, the young man often finds reasons not escalate the problem by trying to calm everyone down. Although it is sometimes unwarranted, his jovial and soothing demeanour during these situations often calms others down, allowing them to reroute their earlier angry episodes. Having grown up with his nose in textbooks, the man has gained enough theoretical knowledge in order to implement these theories into the real world. While not always successful, he does learn from his mistakes, albeit it takes him a few days for his sour mood to truly go away. He always weighs the pros and cons of the situation and asks either himself or the person, allowing them to find the answer for themselves. Funnily enough, Ye is someone who absolutely loathes making a decision. Due to the constant pressure since his childhood and from his family, the man has despised decision making especially when it involves having to be responsible for others. If it’s for himself, he still has a hard time, but isn’t as opposed to it.
Despite this, the trainer has tremendous patience and rarely anything can make him angry. The only issues that push his buttons are his own history, questioning the lack of his goals, and those deliberately doing bad for personal enjoyment. Additionally, he isn’t the type to point the blame anywhere but himself. However, if he is indeed the target of blame without reasonable cause, it can make Ye rather agitated. Should he become agitated even just a bit, Ye excuses himself from the situation immediately, avoiding any other type of confrontation or escalation. Once the source of conflict has eased away, Ye does well to reanalyze the situation in hopes of never putting himself into a similar situation again. He does this with all that he deemed a hassle, making certain parts of his memory quite impressive. It is clear that the man is clever, yet quite lazy with motives that are not direct, but rather passive. Because of this, Ye’s moral compass has not always been solid and the man calls it “flexible” at best. He isn’t one to help others willingly, especially if it puts him into a situation where anything can go wrong – he refuses to be responsible for someone or something especially when he assisted with altruistic intentions.
If the man ever finds himself with his back against the wall, Ye can easily get flustered after he has exhausted all options, often spewing out words he doesn’t quite mean, and breaking promises if need be to leave the situation. He is not proud of this, but instead sees it as a means to survival and a “necessary evil”. Unfortunately, alongside his laid back attitude, the trainer holds a secret that he doesn’t like to tell others. His motivations for starting his journey is paper thin and the man knows it. Deep down, Ye is aware that he has no goal or direction in life; he is merely wandering aimlessly. However, with such a mindset, Ye still adamantly believes that everything happens for a reason, including all the bad and good things. He thoroughly upholds the belief to justify his own actions today: do what makes one happy, and not do things for other people. Ye doesn’t feel as if anyone can control anything, and that would be okay. However, if there’s anything he believes within his flexible moral compass is that if one decides on something for themselves, they need to stick with it no matter what. In this case, Ye has chosen to wander aimlessly, and thus he deserves all the good and bad things that will come to him on his journey.
Because of his upbringing from school, as well as the pollution infested city, Ye has always had a love for nature and what it has to offer. He absolutely adores the freedom and the endless possibilities that can arise from mother nature. From the Pokemon to the simple breeze, Ye finds the outside world away from the hustle and bustle of the city as another place to call home. It’s rare that the man will stay cooped up in any building and would love nothing more but to stay outside, under the stars, even in pouring rain if it meant he wasn’t stuck in between four walls. As for other superficial materials he enjoys, a nice bath and light pampering on a soft bed can easily uplift Ye's mood. Sweets are also his go-to for a nice day. Otherwise, as long as he's not on anyone's hit list or at the butt end of drama, then all is well.
History:
{Childhood} Ye Xiu grew up in a four unit household consisting of his younger brother, mother and father. Prior to his younger brother’s birth, Ye would agree that his family was quite stable. Both his mother and father were in the fierce competition that was business. Though they were not in competing businesses, with his mother working as an HR consultant at a law firm, and his father the CEO of a rather popular company all the way in Djitsan, they were able to still maintain enough time for him. His grandparents told him that at least once a month the three of them would take Ye out to outings or other places a baby would never remember, but hopefully enjoy. It wasn’t a perfect family, but it was his. Sometimes the boy would hear his parent argue, but it was always late at night when he was almost falling asleep. Three year later, his brother, Juan Xiu, was born and it was here Ye felt everything changed. To this day, the man harbours a bit of hatred for his brother, despite his love for the sibling.
Since then, unable to keep track of taking care of both children alongside their horribly busy schedules, the parents’ relationship began to break down. Arguments went from once a week to daily, no longer veiled in the late nights. The Xiu siblings were able to hear everything from their parents and even the harsh words from their mother and father who would verbally lash out at them in sheer anger. Ye and Juan had no choice but to rely on one another for comfort in a cold home. Some times, Ye would teach his brother how to perform simple tasks when the maids refused to tell them, even standing up to certain neighborhood bullies if the situation became too tense. Unfortunately, with the bullies also being children to powerful people as well, their father always yelled at Ye for shoving his nose where it didn't belong. Juan never defended his brother during these scoldings and for a while, Ye felt a bit of resentment for his little brother. However, blood is thicker than water and Ye felt it was still his responsibility as the firstborn to take care of Juan. It wasn’t until Ye reached 9 years old that their father decided to move back to Djitsan to continue working on his business at closer proximity, leaving his wife and two sons in Godai. Though many apologies came from the dad, Ye knew their father simply wanted to escape. The promises of constant financial support were given, but none was able to quell the feeling of abandonment.
From then on, their mother slowly threw herself into work, and soon the Xiu household was run by maids and nannies. The brothers ended up seeing their mother once a week and their father, once a year. Juan, being three years younger, didn’t understand the shift in family dynamics, causing Ye to roll up his sleeves and take care of everything – or at least what he thought he should. Naturally, money was never an issue and there were a plethora of tutours and hired playmates that came to the large house. Gifts hardly ran dry and every week their father would send the newest trend of toys or fashion for his sons in an effort to make up for his disappearance. One, in particular, was a shiny Poochyena for Ye and a shiny Yamask for Juan. These Pokemon were clearly expensive but for the time being, had filled the void in the boys' hearts. Over time, Juan became placated with the goods, but Ye was not.

{Adolescence} Once Ye reached 11 years and Juan, 8, their lives became more hectic. Abroad, their father had suffered a heart attack and their mother had flown back to Djitsan. Although he survived, his wife needed to be with him for the unforeseeable future. Neither parents told their sons when they would return, and yet again the family endured another shift. Ye, being the eldest son, was suddenly bombarded with more tutors and extra classes outside school hours while his brother maintained the usual load. They also still forced him to take care of his sibling while making Ye take classes many grades above his level, threatening his freedom if he didn’t follow through. Ye tried his best to fight back against this, failing miserably every time. There was little he could do seeing how he was merely a child with no money or property to call his own. Even worse, the pre-teen had no one to talk to, and when he tried to address his issues with the maids and nannies, he was met with terrified faces. Every time Juan would lash out, Ye would immediately get blamed. Soon, their parents pulled the Xiu brothers out of public school and into a strict, private boarding school that focused purely on academics with the arts being dead last. The school was a hellhole – as both described it – and basically a prison with nearly militaristic rules. No children could indulge in their fantasies; this meant no video games, no movies, no comic books, no sweets, and no fun. The entire campus was huge but gated and guarded throughout the entire perimeter. Inside was an open plain where the treetops were easily visible through the dorm windows. Every night Ye wished fruitlessly to climb the trees and feel his feet upon soft grass, and not fake grass their school placed on the ground. He wished he could go back to the carefree days where he would laze about at Reedriver Bridge.
Studying was relentless, and within the next five years, it was clear why they had to come to this school. Because of their father’s heart attack, the entire company had panicked and wanted a new heir. As a result, their father had chosen to accelerate Ye into becoming the next CEO, thrusting him deep into learning the laws of business and every little niche subject. It appeared that they wanted Ye to become a textbook of the world, training him in psychology to sciences. What they called “well-rounded”, Ye called it “fruitless”. The boy hated every single second of his studies and never felt he could live up to their impossible expectations. He had even failed a grade, barely passing on his second attempt. Ye didn’t want any of this. He wanted to be free. The more he faltered in his grades, the more items were taken away from him until the only item Ye had left was Happy, his Poochyena. Even his father refused to break the bond between human and Pokemon. There were times where Ye’s thoughts went dark and he only had his canine companion to talk to. He made friends, yes, but none were genuine; they merely looked at him to see what benefits they could reap. They all had a more aggressive personality, speaking over poor Ye whenever he tried to defend himself. Feelings of distaste would further sow their seeds as he saw Juan thriving in the same world Juan was, but of course with less pressure. His young brother had become entranced with his love for the business world and their relationship grew further and further apart. Despite living in the same dormitory hall, the two brothers only saw each other twice a year.
By the time it came for Ye to graduate at 19, he was hardly in the top 85th percentile of his school, and for a split moment, the older brother had believed he was finally free. Alas, money talked in this world and his father was able to arrange for him a seat into Godian State University in Central (GSUC). Absolutely horrified, Ye fought with everything he could, going as far as to flying to his home country and talking it with his father. Not surprisingly, Ye failed to convince his parents with them telling him that he didn’t have a single choice. It was then the adolescent finally understood learned helplessness from his classes. Since then, Ye’s world view solidified.
|
{Adulthood} For the next seven years, Ye allowed everything to dictate his life. From his GSUC counselors to his father, the young man did everything they asked. He wholly believed that as long he would shut his yap, and follow through, he would eventually find freedom. Sure it sucked, but it was a “necessary evil”. Not only this, but as an adult, if he couldn’t control the world around him, then he could at least control his attitude. Giving up on fighting against all that came his way, Ye never once said no. His demeanour changed drastically, allowing himself to make quite a few friends and strong rapports with his superiors. People enjoyed his humour, presence, and refusal to join in any drama or gossip. Ye would simply walk into a room and any heavy atmosphere would immediately become lighter. Just like his father had asked, Ye was establishing connections and his grades skyrocketed into territories that used to be unreachable for the older sibling. In terms of close friends, there was one in particular - a younger student named Nandor, who was a pretty decent emotional support pillar for Ye. The two would go nights talking about the meaning of life and with Ye’s new persona, the talks were engaging and personal. The young man finally had a close enough friend that would go through the same emotional roller coaster that was college. Sadly, Ye always kept Nandor at arm’s length until the younger individual had return to his home in Murus. Nevertheless, it was the closest relationship Ye ever had, but something the man would always cherish. This spoke volumes to Ye as he realized just how detached and robotic he was towards everyone. However, it did not fully solidify until graduation.
After five long years of studying and graduating at the near top of his class, Ye sat on a line of chairs behind the podium. There was a bubbly woman who had bags under her eyes, and despite the forced gel along the sides of her highlighted hair, he could see the split ends all under the weight of stress. He caught a glimpse of her tight eyes and a forced smile. For a moment he believed she was the same as him, but as soon as the words left her mouth at the podium, Ye felt pure heartbreak. She spoke fondly of her family and friends – of all the hardships she endured throughout childhood to now. The woman was tired, but through her voice, she was unapologetically proud. Never had Ye heard a sense of relief of that calibre; never had he even thought along the same lines of her. It was then a devastating sense of regret washed over him. Ye excused himself.
Leaving a stack of booklets and a small note, with nothing short of an apology, Ye packed only his essentials and walked out of the family home. He knew the amount of disappointment that would soon follow, and one day he’d return home, but for now, if he didn’t leave, Ye knew he’d completely lose himself – that was the last piece he refused to give.
