Calista was stopped by a young man with a clipboard and a pencil behind his ear as she started her stride to the next arena. Without looking up, he blinked at the sheet of paper and asked, "Losers?"
"What?"
He looked up, brow pinched. "Loser? This is the loser category." She gave a small smile and a nod, trying not to feel too deflated. "We just get a few winners headed over here since it's not well signposted. You're not a winner, though?"
"No," Calista said carefully.
"A loser then." He flipped the sheet up and gave a loud, elongated 'hmmmm' as he scanned his papers, like a bassy punctured pool floatie. "Right. This is you?" He jabbed his finger under the table clearly labeled 'LOSERS' in bold, and Calista resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Head on in, okay. Good luck."
She squeezed past him and through the entryway to stand in her space for the battle. With an empty spot opposite her, Calista had a moment to take in her surroundings that she might not have otherwise had. It was mostly lush grass and a couple of bushes and trees, but notably the centre of the battlefield was largely taken up by a roundish, shallow pond. "Puck, you ready?" she asked. They had been training and practising together here and there, but she still wasn't super confident in the young ice Vulpix's ability to listen to her commands, or to produce a consistent amount of power.
He emerged just as she said his name, arching his back and then lowering his head, lifting his rump to the sky and wiggling it as he gave himself a thorough stretch. His six tails shuddered and wagged as he straightened up again, and the crowd, some still filtering in, squealed and 'aww'ed appropriately. It made Calista smile to hear these strangers confirm her suspicions. Her new pokemon was super adorable. She was looking forward to hearing their reactions as they battled together publicly for the first time.
When the opponent appeared, Calista rolled her shoulders, waited for the referee to give the command, and then nodded. "Start this off with a Baby-Doll Eyes!" she said. When the foe was ready to begin, the Vulpix would try to catch its attention and give it the sweetest, most naive wide-eyed stare he could muster.

Usually, when it came to tournaments, it was supposed to be over for him when he lost the round. It wasn't the case for this type of tournament because even if he lost the round, he would still get the chance to participate through the loser category rounds. As long he would win every round there, he was still safe in the tournament. While he was still unfazed at his loss, he was still shocked at how his previous opponent's Machop managed to outsmart his strategies with her brawn and her trainer's counter-strategies.
Taking a deep breath once more as the announcer called out his name, Cole calmly walked through the tunnel and stand at the opposite side of the battlefield. He wasn't a stranger to this field this time as he previously battled in this same battlefield against Luther and his Machop. And rather than using his Frogadier this time, he decided to use another Pokemon that would catch his opponent off-guard and he already knew who he should call out next.
"Zwei, it's time for battle!" He called out as he tossed his Poke Ball in the air, which it popped open and released his Sword Pokemon. While his Honedge was a bit inexperienced in a real battle, he did train him with his training style and strategies before the tournament along with his other Pokemon. "Get ready, Zwei. Prepare for any kind of tricks your opponent will have on her sleeve!"
His Honedge nodded in response, which was enough to let him know his answer. While seeing his opponent's strange Vulpix was a bit surprising for him, he was a bit confident regarding his Sword Pokemon's power. When he saw that Calista's Vulpix used Baby-Doll Eyes though, Zwei became a bit sorry upon seeing his wide-eyed shiny eyes. However, Cole frowned at this sight and screamed, "Zwei, eyes front and counter! Don't let him deceive you with his naive eyes!"
He already knew what kind of attack Baby-Doll Eyes was since his Audino used it many times in his previous battles. And judging by how Calista ordered him to use it as their first move, he could tell they were trying to weaken Zwei's power. Unfortunately for them, Cole already learned his lesson in his last battle and he already has a way to counter it. He didn't need to tell him what kind of attack he will use as he saw Zwei removed his sheath from his blade and floated around the area in a frenzy dance, which his whole body began to glow orange. Once that was done, he tightened his grip on his sheath as he prepared himself for what was to come next.

The Honedge was intimidating, and Calista found herself mesmerised by the way it glinted and shone in the light as it danced, the sheath swinging around independently now from the fully revealed blade. She pursed her lips and glanced to her Vulpix, waving his tails left and right and looking back at her, bright and ready. She couldn't stand the thought of what would happen if the sword swept across the battlefield and slashed her brand new pokemon; the thought made her shiver.
They would just have to give it their all before that happened.
The Swords Dance had nullified their first attack, but also the opponent hadn't had a real first attack either, so they were back on totally even footing. Ignoring, perhaps, that Puck wouldn't be able to jump around indefinitely without needing to rest.
"Let's stop putting this off!" she called good-naturedly to her opponent, and clapped her hands to get Puck's attention again. "Get ready for a tough battle, and use Mist." It was mostly a showboating move, but Calista was hoping it would unnerve her opponent even a little bit, and do something to shorten the gap between their levels of experience.
Puck bounded forward to the edge of the pond and tilted his head back, letting out his most ferocious ... high-pitched mewl. The audience ate it up, squealing and applauding as the ice Vulpix gave his very best battlecry. The air around him suddenly superchilled, the range around him growing and filling almost the entire arena until even the tips of Calista's fingers became numb. A hailstorm blew in blurry circles around the little ice type, raining over the once peaceful surface of the water. As soon as the Snow Warning had billowed to fill most of the field, Puck used Mist -- or Calista assumed he did, as it was now incredibly hard for her to see him, or their foe.
From the epicentre of the hailstorm swirled a thin, thready Mist of pale white, carried by the force of the icy storm and reducing visibility even further. Calista covered her mouth with numb fingers to hide a pleased smile. In the grand scheme of things, this would do almost nothing to actively harm the Honedge, but hopefully the audience and referee were enjoying how intense it was looking out on the field already.

Cole took a sigh of relief once he saw his Honedge's Swords Dance in action. While attacking Calista's Vulpix might give him a bit of advantage, he did need to do something with Puck's last attack. Even if they do it again, it will just revert to Zwei's original strength and he will just order him to use it again. In a sense, he already had an advantage when it came to enhancing his Pokemon's stats at the perfect time. He was surprised at not only Puck created Mist around the battlefield, but he also has some kind of ability to summon a hail in the middle of summer.
Sure, he was unfazed at the Mist since Zwei's Metal Sound would be useless with his current moveset, but the Hail was another issue on hand. He didn't know how it summoned either another move or ability he didn't read before in his books, but he knew this might be the beginning of an annoyance if he might make a small mistake.
For now, all he could do was to continue his strategy while he braced himself for any kinds of tricks Calista planned. "Zwei, let's show this Vulpix who's boss!"
His Honedge nodded before he quickly flew directly towards his target. "Now Pursuit!" Crying out a metallic cry, he flew through the Mist in an attempt to strike Puck with the non-sharpened area of his blade. While most of the field was almost shrouded by the Mist, he knew his attack may give Zwei a high chance of a sneak attack.
Though this made him wonder... Just what kind of Vulpix was that? He never saw a white Vulpix before and judging by how it used Mist and summon up a hailstorm, he guessed that it wasn't a Fire-type, unlike its original species. Whatever his type was, Cole decided to keep cautious for the rest of the battle.

"Puck, stay sharp!"
The Mist combined with his natural battle ability to create swirling hailstorms meant that the battlefield already looked incredibly dangerous, even though in reality it was only a little flying hail. The Mist, too, would clear up in just a few moments. Calista's tactic to psych out the opponent just a little bit might not have worked, since the longsword-like pokemon -- which Calista thought was so incredibly cool by the way -- clearly didn't rely on its sight as much as her own mammalian partner.
However, she tried to catch sight of her opponent through the miniature snowstorm and thought maybe he didn't look uber-confident. She figured it was unlikely she had a type advantage here, as the most likely typing for a sword pokemon was going to be steel, so she would have to try to be sneaky and tricksy to drag this out and at least give the audience a good time. Calista was good at factoring in different elements of her entire surroundings and utilising them to get out of bad situations, but it was hard to move that mindset to a pokemon battle. They were so fast-paced and it wasn't her fighting, it was her cute little buddy instead. That changed the way she looked at things. Made it harder to gain an upper hand.
The Honedge let out a weirdly clanging battlecry that severely rivaled the high-pitched mewl Puck had let out, and Calista instinctively pointed her index finger in its direction. She actually couldn't see either of the pokemon, but as the Vulpix was in the eye of his own storm, she felt he might do better at assessing his surroundings than her. Pursuit was not a steel-type move, so she had some leeway here.
"Meet it head-on," she commanded quickly. No way were you supposed to run away from a Pursuit! Even Calista knew that. "Ice Shard, now."
The ice move was the fastest one he had, so if Puck could pinpoint where the Honedge was in the mini storm, it would probably hit the swordlike pokemon before Puck was hit by Pursuit. Calista thought she could see Puck summoning the plentiful moisture from the air, freezing it with his icy aura, and sending the shards hurtling through the fading Mist. Seconds later, he squealed and flipped backwards, tumbling a few feet and landing with a 'splish' in the pond. Calista watched as the storm surreally moved to keep him in its centre, causing ice chips to form on the surface of the water as he struggled to pull himself out and back on dry land.

Upon seeing several shards of ice buffeted to his Honedge, Cole couldn't help but wince in pain after seeing this. He had to admit, that was a very good first move from Calista. Not only her Pokemon seemed to have strong Ice-type long-ranged attacks, but his Ice Shard was much faster than Honedge's Pursuit. Even if he tried to command him to change attacks, it wouldn't matter due to the attack's special priority state. Regardless, he was still unfazed by this since he could see that Zwei managed to recover after the Ice Shard. For now, he would focus on offense before switching to defense.
But there was a bit of a problem. While Zwei was a Steel/Ghost-type, he didn't have any Steel-type offensive attacks in his moveset right now. Sure, his high attack power might compensate this drawback, he was still worried at what kind of attacks this Vulpix has on his sleeve. He could try using Autotomize to help him increase his speed, but there might be a drawback that the hailstorm and another Ice Shard might completely put him off-balance and fell onto the now icy waters. He could try another Swords Dance, but he needed the right time to execute it. Otherwise, he might take too much damage and exhaust most of his energy for the fight. He needed to fight smart. She was like Luther and there was no way he wanted to make a repeat of those past events.
But then, he noticed Calista's Vulpix attempted to get back to dry land. While this might be a bit mean, this was his only chance to attack and weaken him further. "Zwei, don't let him get back on land! Use Pursuit again!" Glaring at his opponent once more, Zwei charged towards him and attempted to smack him with his non-sharpened part of the blade. If he could see that Puck might fall into the waters, the Honedge flew back a few meters away from him before he prepared himself for the next attack. If this could work, he might able to strike back with his secret attack.

Calista could see how much Puck was struggling to tread water and scramble up from the slippery rim. That one single attack had really almost knocked him out, she realised with a wince, and knew that this tournament had taught her to start prioritising her pokemon's defensive capabiliies. So far, they both had no ability to absorb more than two competent attacks. Puck slipped under the water, so tired from his attempts that even the Snow Warning swirling around him was weakening.
She gritted her teeth. It was time to pull something out and see if she could at least last through this second attack without misstepping and accidentally drowning her brand new pokemon.
The Honedge was zooming across the battlefield, bladed body glinting in the stadium lights, and Puck had just resurfaced, gasping and splashing at the icy water with small white paws. The sword pokemon was quick, but she was certain Puck was quicker.
"Icy Wind on the water right behind you," she called over. The Vulpix gasped in air and flailed momentarily before calming down and floating. Almost instantaneously, the vortex of superchilled air created a very thin layer of ice behind his head. As the Honedge approached them, the floating ice platform thickened, and Puck heaved himself onto it. To his species' credit, he was not shivering from the chill of the frozen water, but fatigued almost to the point of sliding back into the water.
"Now, look him right in the ..." She had almost said 'eye', of course, but did the foe actually have one? "Face...?" That was no better. "And use a Confuse Ray!"
The hail-ridden air crackled with a new type of energy and Puck's face darkened. Orbs of fuzzy blue circled his head, twitching and spasming as they locked on and hurtled themselves towards the Honedge at the edge of the water. It was just a delaying tactic, but Calista was proud of herself for this one. Puck was isolated on a 3-foot squared island of ice, bobbing around in the water. The foe would struggle to get to him, while he could fire off icy potshots. It felt cheap, and maybe it was, but it was the first time Calista had ever actually thought up a 'tactic', and she could feel her heart pounding, eager to find out what might happen next.

He couldn't tell whether if he was annoyed that Zwei's attack missed or how impressed that the Vulpix used his Icy Wind to create a block of ice to avoid that another Pursuit. Regardless, he knew he was already nearing the end and these next set of moves will determine this round. Despite this, he was still worried about Zwei himself. He didn't know how long with the Hail last, but he has to act fast before he couldn't endure more of it.
But looking at the block of ice reminded him of something. Just the shape alone reminded him of a hockey puck, which seemed to based on its nickname that Calista gave him. This gave him a crazy, yet risky idea after seeing. All that's left was to relay it to his Pokemon. But just before he can even command him, Puck fired some kind of ray to his Pokemon. Before he knew it, his Pokemon began to wave its blade wildly. He groaned at this, that Confuse Ray was a clean hit and this was a bit problematic considering this was his first battle and he hadn't experienced this condition before. Regardless, he had to make sure that his Honedge will get the message.
"Zwei, swing yourself! Imagine yourself like in those baseball games you've always seen every weekend!" He knew that might be a confusing command, but if he could try to hear some words, he might able to know the true meaning of it and enact his plan. Much to his surprise, the Sword Pokemon continued to swing his blade as it charged towards the white Vulpix. But what he didn't know was due to his confusion, Honedge saw him as a large white baseball, which he then swung itself like a baseball bat towards the poor fox, attempting to strike it like a baseball.
