Chris walked into the arena squinting up at the artificial lights. His battle earlier was held during the daytime, so the sun was shining down on the arena. This battle was taking place at night, but the lights shining down were just as bright. As his eyes adjusted to the illumination he looked at the arena. It looked similar to the last battle. Trees that covered most of the area with only an open spot in the middle and to the sides where he and his opponent were standing. This might be a good sign, or a bad sign.
The last fight against Bailey took place in an arena similar to this one. It was only because of the trees that he managed to hold his own, even if his opponent hardly took any damage during the fight. The fact that he lasted so long was the only reason Chris was staying in the tournament. But how long will I last this time? A forest setting was Rein's home turf, but if his opponent was used to the forest as well.
Hesitantly Chris pulled out the Pokeball containing Rein. The staff did a great job restoring the bug/fighting Pokemon after the fight, and both he and Rein talked afterwards as they waited for this fight. Actually he talked, but it at least looked like Rein was listening. He still couldn't tell what the Heracross was thinking, but he talked just like he did with Samis. He thought about the battle with Bailey and her Trapinch. About how he managed to keep them from knocking Rein out quickly. And he thought about how they could improve.
There wasn't enough time to do more training, but it did give Chris a chance to clear his head and focus on what they could do better. Now that they were in the arena he felt a little more confident in himself and his Pokemon. They might not be strong, but they were determined to become stronger. With a smile Chris tossed the Pokeball and released Rein. The bug/fighting Pokemon appeared from the light stretching in the open air, and looked around curiously. It turned to look back at Chris, who only gave a smile and a nod, and turned as the trainer pointed at the other side of the arena. Their opponent had arrived.

Luke lingered in the arena tunnel, tapping against the wall rhythmically as he waited to hear his name called again. The first round had been exhilarating, but had not ended as he had hoped. Martini had been just too much for him to handle as a trainer, and Makani had suffered the results of that. Still, the medical staff here had patched her up quickly, and he had used the time between battles to watch her second battle and do some personal planning.
She had had a plan when he hadn't. That was a hard lesson to learn.
A warbling voice called out his last name, distorted by the cheers of the crowd.
Show time.
Luke shook dust off his shoulder and walked towards the bright rectangle in front of him. As he passed through the threshold, his surroundings went from dark and tight to bright and spacious. The droning of the crowd, no longer muffled by cement walls, flooded his ears. Their energy was palpable, and only worked to increase the flood of emotions filling him. Goosebumps rippled across his skin.
This was a night game, and unlike the past location, this arena was open to the sky. That made more sense for this particular setting, as instead of craggy rocks and sand dunes, this arena was essentially a pocket forest. Thick foliage covered a large percentage of the area, with trees and shrubs dotted around perimeter. A grassy patch lay between him and his opponent, a man just slightly younger than himself. A blueish creature stood in front of him, a large horn pointed straight back at Luke.
A heracross? Now that was a powerful pokemon. This tournament was not lacking in power or skill, from what Luke could see.
All the more reason for him to learn and do better now. There was no third chance here.
He pulled out Makani's ball and threw it into the air. Her winged form appeared from the light, flapping quickly to steady itself in the air. She clicked down at him energetically, eyes nearly bulging out of her head. She looked up at the purplish rectangle that was the evening sky.
BWAAAAAAAAAMMM.
Go time.
"Makani, let's go! Quick! Sand Attack, followed by Harden!"
The bat responded relatively quickly to the command, darting down low towards the grassy plain below. She glided across the field, aura collecting and elongating in her dual stingers. As she approached the bipedal beetle, she whipped her tail into the ground and tore up dirt and sod, sending clumps of both flying ahead. She banked left after doing that, swinging around a tree as she retreated slightly. The remaining aura in her tail began to creep across her purple exoskeleton, creating a thin layer of energy showing as a glossy finish.
Luke watched as she continued her turn. His plan wasn't the best, but he had little battle experience, and he had no idea what kind of opponent he had. He looked back at the young man across from him and tried to read his face, waiting to hear the first words of the match from him.
Makani used Sand Attack! Makani used Harden!

As the names were announced Chris waited patiently for his opponent. "Lucas Windsor!" The young trainer watched as a young man stepped into the arena. Young man? His opponent looked to be only a few years older than Chris. Wearing a blue shirt over red and sporting a green backpack on his back. At least he's colorful. The trainer released his Pokemon, and then without hesitation started his attack.
The Pokemon they faced now was a Gliscor, and the only reason Chris knew that was because his mother called it a 'contradiction'. A Pokemon that had the aura of a flying and a ground type, which made Gligar and the evolved form Gliscor rare. There were a few flying/rock types, but out of all of the flying Pokemon Gliscor was immune to electric. "Which is why it's a contradiction." The flying/ground type Pokemon was only treated once at the Pokemon Center as far as Chris knew, and he wasn't working when it happened. So he knew next to nothing about the Pokemon besides the fact it was immune to electric.
Which is why Chris and Rein were unprepared for the quick attack by his opponent. He didn't have time to tell his Heracross to cover his eyes in time. The sand struck home, and Rein let out a cry of protest as he was temporarily blinded. Then Lucas gave the command to Harden and the Gliscor veered off to strengthen itself. Why didn't he attack? That would have been the logical thing to do, wouldn't it? Hit while the dust was obstructing the view, even if it didn't hit? Maybe he's a new trainer like me. That didn't make sense either because the Gliscor was very quick on the draw.
Chris frowned a little as he ran Pokemon types through his head as he quickly thought of a plan. If he was right, water and ice were the only moves that were super effective, which Rein had neither. But at the same time Gliscor was resistant to bug and fighting, and obviously a bit stronger since it was evolved. This is not good. If they can't overpower their opponent then Chris would have to out think them.
Watching carefully Chris determined that Gliscor more glided than actually flew. The beating of wings were more to provide balance than actual lift. So it might not be able to take off from the ground. So they needed to ground it first. It looked like Lucas was watching to see what they would do. Since it mainly glides it can't hover in place. He pointed at the trees. "Rein, head into the trees and hide in the branches. Then use Bullet Seed as he glides past." Since Heracross was born and raised in the forest it was like a second home to him. That might give them the advantage for a little while, at least until Chris could finish his planning. The bug/fighting Pokemon hovered into the forest in order to lose himself in the branches of the trees. He'd set himself in place and attack when he spots the Gliscor. Hopefully he was right about Gliscor having to always move in the air.

Luke frowned as the heracross ducked into the thicker foliage. Thinking back, it would probably have been better to push forward and cut off his opponent's path to cover. Hindsight always was 20/20, wasn't it?
A string of blobs suddenly shot out of the bushes, pelting Makani's wings as she flew past. As the objects ricocheted off the pokemon, their reduced speed allowed them to be clearly seen as oblong seeds. Makani shrugged off most of the attack, losing some altitude from the forces applied to her back, but otherwise continued on.
Luke peered over at his opponent. That was a pretty good starting move, even though the typings just weren't in his favor. If Luke wanted to win this, he would need to really up his mental game. And, from the shift in calls from the crowd, they agreed.
He flipped through the moves he knew Makani could use, trying to see what would be useful against a hidden opponent. Ice Fang, Poison Jab, Quick Attack, Aerial Ace... all good moves, but all moves that required getting up close and personal.
The same weakness of Makani from the first round was coming back to bite him yet again: Makani's a close range fighter with not much else.
Shit.
"Makani! Fly back! Make room for a minute while we try to pla..." Luke trailed off at the end as a thought hit him.
Special moves. He had received a few technical machines during the summer solstice. Most had been used solely on Alina, but if he remembered right, he had given a few to Makani just because she could learn them.
Outside of Aerial Ace, they hadn't practiced any in a while. He really hoped she could still do them.
"Makani, change of plans! Use Toxic on those shrubs!"
Makani flapped her wings, slowly regaining some of her elevation. She looked back at her trainer and cocked her head, confused by the command.
"Toxic!" Luke mimed smoke pouring out of his mouth as best he could, trying his best to exaggerate his moves for her.
It seemed to work well enough. Makani chirped as she appeared to realize what he meant swooped down towards where the heracross had disappeared. As she flew over the area, she opened her mouth and exhaled. Purplish aura, lighter in color than Luke would have hoped, billowed out of her mouth. The dense mist settled over the air, creeping down towards the ground any way it could.
Luke pumped his fist, a smile crossing his face a bit as he heard the cheers of the crowd change. Their energy poured into him, as he was sure it did for his opponent. As intense as this battle was, Luke had to admit that the adrenaline felt really good.
"Good job Makani! Hold a Quick Attack for when you see it appear!"
Makani made a short turn, aura collecting in her once more as she surveyed the land for her prey. Even from this distance, Luke could feel how eager Makani was. She was a predator, and he needed to do better letting her follow her nature. Battling was really teaching him a lot.
He just hoped it would be enough to win.
Makani was hit by Bullet Seed! Makani used Toxic! Makani is waiting to use Quick Attack...

Chris smiled as the seeds struck the Gliscor in the wing. It was enough to cause the Pokemon to wobble, but not even close enough to drop the gliding Pokemon. We need to get it on the ground. He tried to see if there was a pattern to the ground/flying Pokemon's flight. It did a good job turning and soaring on the small air currents within the arena, so maybe he could predict it....
Right now he had more pressing matters to address. It looked like the attack did little to no damage, which wasn't surprising considering how fast the gliding Pokemon moved. They would have to keep out of sight if they had any chance against.... "Makani, change of plans! Use Toxic on those shrubs!" Chris mentally cursed the command, and then was surprised when the airborne Pokemon looked back in confusion.
"Rein! Out of the trees! He hoped he acted fast enough as the trainer tried to explain the move. Rein dropped down from the branches as Gliscor released the toxic cloud that covered the tree tops. Chris was almost celebrating, but noticed that some of the cloud had engulfed Rein. The Heracross emerged, and Chris could tell the telltale signs that he was poisoned. A twinge of pain laced down the body; the only outward indication that Rein was not well. However like normal the bug/fighting Pokemon gave a strong front to his foe by standing firm. It was something Chris admired in the Pokemon.
However their opponents weren't done yet. "Good job Makani! Hold a Quick Attack for when you see it appear!" Well Heracross was out in the open, so the Gliscor struck quickly with a white sheen that surrounded its body. "Rein, Tackle and toss!" The bug/fighting Pokemon braced himself on the ground, and charged into the strike from the Gliscor. They hit with a near equal impact, yet Rein was pushed back a bit from the force. Still he was able to hook his horn under and around the gliding Pokemon's body, and with a twist of his body threw it towards one of the trees nearby. "Use Bullet Seed!" Rein then released another barrage of seeds at the thrown Pokemon. These seemed a little stronger than last time.

Luke grinned as Makani slammed into her victim. The impact was more than enough to push the heracross back, and he could see that it was straining to hold its ground.
"Atta girl, Makani," Luke muttered under his breath. He went to call out another move, but was cut off by the other trainer's own command. He couldn't process quite what was said, but he saw the result.
With a smoothness one gets from experience, the heracross maneuvered its horn under the gliscor's body and twisted, flipping Makani over and tossing her to the side. She flapped her wings frantically, trying to right herself, but was knocked further off balance by the following barrage of seeds. These pelting items, mixed with Makani being unable to get turned around, lead to her crashing down into the ground. She screeched, a harsh sound that was both hurt and angry.
"Makani!" Luke cursed at the sight of her being so riled up. He instinctively moved to take a step towards her, but stopped himself right before crossing the chalk line in front of him. The crowd swelled as they saw this movement, seeing that the match had nearly ended in a forfeit.
Not today. Luke wasn't ready to lose on a stupid technicality. It was time for him to push the offensive. After all, while Makani may have been temporarily grounded, she wasn't completely helpless. They had already learned of one little trick to get out of this situation. Besides, up close and personal was her specialty.
"Makani, get yourself back up to speed with Quick Attack! Then go in for an Ice Fang!"
Makani, still making a fuss, stopped when she heard the familiar commands. She clicked in response while aura collected across her body once again. She jumped as hard as she could, using the propulsion of the aura to launch her skyward. It didn't get her too high, but it was enough for her to stretch her wings and get back to gliding. She turned her wings and pushed herself forward, arcing straight towards the heracross. Her fangs came out, frost already forming around her lips, as she tried to land a big bite on her prey.
Heracross threw Makani at a tree, but missed! Heracross used Bullet Seed! Makani used Quick Attack to get back some air! Makani went in for an Ice Fang!

”Great job!” Chris gave the praise with a big grin on his face as Heracross managed to hook the Gliscor under its body and toss it away. And the Bullet Seed right after hit hard in its back, and it crashed to the ground. Now that it was grounded they had a good chance of winning. At least until his opponent used a move they weren’t expecting. "Makani, get yourself back up to speed with Quick Attack! Then go in for an Ice Fang!" The ground/flying Pokemon quickly recovered and took off into the air before Rein had a chance to close in.
Cursing the rotten luck Chris could only watch as Gliscor made a quick turn in mid-air and charged towards Rein. The frost dripping from the Pokemon’s teeth looked a lot like a rare poison. Before Chris had a chance to tell Rein to counter with something the bug/fighting Pokemon brought up his arms to try and block the attack. Gliscor sunk its teeth into Rein’s left hand, and a layer of frost and ice formed from the point of contact. Rein let out a cry of pain and frustration, and with the other hand popped a Sitrus Berry into his mouth that he held within his shell. Glad I gave that to him. Already the wound was starting to heal, but it was still covered in frost and ice.
The impact managed to push Rein back, but the bug/fighting Pokemon was used to bracing itself from training in the forest. It seemed like a rookie error to Chris. The ground/flying Pokemon appeared to be more of an up close and personal type opponent, which unfortunately Rein was as well. ”Rein grab it, and then Leer and Horn Attack it into a tree.” The bug/fighting Pokemon flinched as the poison continued to work in his system, but brought up his right hand to try and grab onto his opponent as his eyes became as cold as the frost on his arm. He lowered his head as well, getting ready to charge into the nearest tree with his opponent.

"Atta girl, Makani!" Luke growled the praise, both hands tucked into fists from the excitement. Those fangs had impaled the heracross, sinking in deep to the arm. That had to really have hurt.
The happiness faded quickly, however, as he saw the beetle pull a small object out and ingest it. That wasn't good. He didn't know what it was doing, but it most likely would help give the advantage right back to the other side. He would have to fix that somehow. Hopefully the toxic gas had taken effect. If not, he would need to regain lost ground by usi-
"...and Horn Attack it into a tree.” The ending of the orders just barely made it to his ears, snapping it out of his momentary daydreaming. Aura glowed in the opponent's eyes, causing Makani to squirm about. She lowered her ears and hissed at him. He responded by reaching out and grabbing Makani's wing, causing her to cry out even more. She flailed about, trying to wrench herself from the grasp.
"Shit!"
The heracross drove its horn into Makani and began shoving her back, charging towards a tree. Makani kept moving, screeching the whole time. She slashed at the horn and arm, her pincers making a horrible sound as they slid across that tough exterior. The heracross, meanwhile, continued its relentless force.
There was something off with this. Luke kept watching, trying desperately to figure out what it was. The attack was certainly hitting well. And the body of the hera-
The body. That was it. He shouldn't be able to see the body of the pokemon as we as he was from this angle. Especially not if it was truly holding Makani. Instead, it was holding with its right and pushing forward with just the horn. That meant it wasn't using its left, and the torso had twisted to its left to compensate.
The same side as the hand hurt by Ice Fang.
And if it was favoring its left side, that meant its right was a bit more vulnerable.
"Makani, strike back with Aerial Ace! Aim for its leg!"
Makani's tail began to glow, aura collecting in the stingers once more. However, this time it was a much more brilliant white and much more transparent than before. It screeched once more before whipping its tail around rapidly, trying to slam into the right knee of her assailant.

Chris watched as Rein managed to get a good grip on the Gliscor. Both Pokemon flew quickly at the tree, and Chris was surprised at the desperate reaction from the ground/flying opponent. It unleashed a barrage of scratches and bites on Rein’s hard shell, but the attack had little effect. The two slammed into the tree with devastating force, and in the impact Rein lost his grip on his opponent. It was then that Chris noticed the bright glow coming from Gliscor’s tail. ”Endure!”
Right when the Gliscor whipped its tail at Rein the Heracross brought up his arms and braced himself. The strike struck the bug/fighting Pokemon in the leg, but Rein stood strong against the attack. He did flinch painfully from the strike, but Endure kept him standing. A big grin came to Chris’s face. Gliscor was wide open. ”Alright, let’s use Aerial....” Rein flinched again, and his entire body became relaxed as he slumped to the ground. ”…Ace….”
Chris stood there stunned as he saw that Rein had fainted. He tried to run through his head what happened, and realized that in the moment he had forgotten that Rein was badly poisoned. It looked like it took the last of the bug/fighting Pokemon’s energy, and the Heracross couldn’t remain standing afterwards.
Just as the judge announced his loss Chris ran forward out of the box. The Pokemon Center team was standing to the side ready to help, but Chris wasn’t going to trust their assessment until he had a chance himself. He knelt next to Rein’s body just as another shudder of poison coursed through the bug/fighting Pokemon’s body. Laying a hand on the Pokemon Chris gave a basic check to see how bad the injuries were. Rein’s left hand was dripping wet as the frost and ice was beginning to melt, but the punctures from the fangs appeared to have sealed with the help of the berry. A few scrapes along the shell from Gliscor’s last attempt to get free, but no obvious cracks. And a very big bruise was forming on the leg that Gliscor hit. All in all if the poison was taken care of quickly then Rein would make a full recovery.
Chris leaned back on his heels as the Pokemon medics hurried over to examine Rein. He let them do their work, but pointed out some details they missed when they only focused on the big injuries. They humored him at first, but once they saw what he pointed out they seemed surprised. They hauled the unconscious Heracross onto the stretcher and got ready to head out.

Makani screamed as she was crushed between the horn and the tree, the wood splintering under the impact. That did not stop her from continuing with her attack. As the stingers swung around, the heracross saw and pulled back. Aura flooded its body right before the tail slammed into it, the snap of the impact cutting straight through the roar of the crowd. Everyone quieted down, waiting to see what would happen afterwards.
The heracross raised its arm, ready to attack the pinned creature one more time. The arm moved forward.
"Makani, use-"
Luke was cut off by the beetle's bottle following its arm. Both slumped forward, and then slowly settled.
Luke stared on. "What the hell... Did , did I just win?"
Makani wriggled her way out from under the body and scurried away, growling at the body as it did so. It didn't respond.
BWWWAAAAAAAAAMM.
"Rein is unable to continue! Makani has won!"
The other trainer sprinted towards the body, the on-site medical staff close behind. The limp pokemon was soon obscured by humans swarming around it, checking vitals and doing their best to treat it.
Luke started running out too, ignoring the rest of what was being announced. What had happened? Had the attack just taken it all out of him? Or did the poison take hold?
He was only a dozen yards away when his vision suddenly became purple. Makani jumped onto him, chittering and clacking enthusiastically. Her weight caused him to stagger backward. With muffled grunts, he clawed her off him.
"Get off, Makani!"
She responded by crawling back on him.
"I... said... off!" He reached back with one hand and fumbled around for her ball. Finding it, he pushed the button and recalled her. Her last cry faded away as she disappeared into the energy field.
He spat out the dirt that had filled his mouth with her affectionate assault and then continued forward. By the time he finished that and continued, the medical team had all but finished. The heracross was strapped to a stretcher and was being taken away. The trainer was standing there, listing off a bunch of jargon Luke did not understand at all. He waited for him to continue before starting.
"Hey, uh... is Rein going to okay? Your heracross?" Luke turned and looked at the stretcher. "I'm sorry. Was it that last hit, or was it poison, or what did it? I just..."
Luke stopped his rambling and sighed. "I won't keep you. I hope it recovers fully. They've got some of the best here, so it will be taken good care of." He stuck out his hand. "Good job. It was a tough battle. Good luck, and go join them. You sounded like you knew plenty about healing."

Chris noticed a commotion coming from where his opponent was, but he dismissed it as Lucas and his Pokemon just celebrating. He made sure that Rein was being taken care of when the trainer approached. "Hey, uh... is Rein going to okay? Your heracross?" "I'm sorry. Was it that last hit, or was it poison, or what did it? I just..." Chris was a bit off balanced by the rambling words. Was Lucas nervous about talking to him? Guilty? Maybe both?
"I won't keep you. I hope it recovers fully. They've got some of the best here, so it will be taken good care of." The young man offered his hand. "Good job. It was a tough battle. Good luck, and go join them. You sounded like you knew plenty about healing." Chris took the hand and smiled slightly. This guy was definitely nervous about talking to him, even though he looked to be a few years Chris’s senior. ”It’s ok, Rein has been poisoned before. Maybe not as badly, but he’s been through it already.” That was true. Shortly after meeting the Heracross Chris had seen Joy, the name he picked out for the Budew with Rein at the time, accidentally poison Rein before an important battle. That one ended in a draw because of the poison.
Nodding towards the people leaving with the stretcher Chris continued. ”I helped my mom in the Pokemon Center back in my hometown a lot. I learned how to spot things most medics pass over because they’re too focused on the obvious injuries. But he’s going to be alright.” He looked around, but didn’t see the Gliscor from before. ”What about your Gliscor? Makani right? It looked like she took quite a beating.” About that time the medics had disappeared into the hallway leading to the recovery station. One held back and waved Chris to join them. ”Well, gotta go. Good luck in the tournament.” He took a few steps before stopping and turning back to Lucas. ”You better win your next battle, or I’m going to feel bad for losing.” He gave a quick grin before jogging after the medical personnel.
