Status ailments are what affects a Pokemon's ability to battle. Below is a list we follow in Godai and how it applies in RP terms.
Burns are typically the result of battling against a Fire type Pokemon, occurring when the victim is seared by scorching flames. The Burn status ailment continuously damages a target over time. Burns also make it uncomfortable for the victim to move, and consequently cause their physical attacks to become progressively weaker as fight continues. Fire Types themselves are immune to burns. The best way to treat a Burn is with a bottle of Burn Heal spray. The juices of a Rawst Berry will also do the trick, providing a cooling effect to areas affected by Burns.
Some Ice type attacks have a small chance to completely freeze over the target, encasing them in a thick block of ice. Obviously, a Frozen target can absolutely do nothing while trapped in the ice. Chances of the effect occurring are quite low, but when it happens it is one of the most troublesome ailments around. Freeze can be remedied over time by just letting the Pokemon thaw out. More impatient methods include just melting the ice with an Ice Heal, or the juice of an Aspear Berry.
Pokemon inflicted with Paralysis run the chance of being unable to move. Paralysis is often inflicted by Electric type attacks, but other moves have been known to cause the ailment as well. If a Pokemon suffering from Paralysis is able to move at all, they are severely inhibited. Usually they are immobilized by jolts of Electricity lancing through their muscles and cannot move for the turn. A Parlyz Heal or a Cheri Berry will return the affected Pokemon’s mobility.
Poison is quite possibly the most dangerous of all status ailments. It continuously inflicts damage to the victim, slowly depleting their health and energy. Unlike Burns, the effects of Poison persist outside of battle. Pokémon inflicted with Poison should be given medical treatment as fast as possible.
Along with the poison status, a Pokémon can also be badly poisoned. The effects are similar to poison but the damage worsens the longer the afflicted Pokémon goes untreated. Trainers are advised to look out for the signs of Poisoning, and be prepared to take action. Symptoms that may suggest your Pokemon is poisoned are shaky movement, sweating, fatigue, and heavy breathing. Antidotes are sold at the Pokemart, and Pecha Berries serve as a natural cure to Poisoning. Full Restores and other all-purpose medicines will work as well.
The victim is lulled to sleep by Hypnosis or some other sort of consciousness manipulation. Victims are not simply put to sleep, but more like a deep trance. This renders the Pokemon to be immovable and susceptible to all attacks. Often times a trainer is forced to switch when their Pokemon is afflicted by sleep. This status effect can be neutralized with an Awakening, a Chesto Berry, or by the Pokemon waking up on its own after a short amount of time.
Sonic waves or bright lights send the target Pokemon into a dazed Confusion. A Confused Pokemon becomes very disorientated and is liable to hurt itself in its own stupor. The strong tastes of Lum Berries and Full Heals provide the only cure for a state of confusion, aside from just letting the Pokemon shake off the status itself.
The Pokemon becomes smitten with its opponent and may be unwilling to fight them. Forcing an Infatuated Pokemon to fight its love will 50% of the time be met with resistance. Infatuation is caused when Attract is used on an opponent of the opposite gender. A Pokemon versing an opponent with the Ability Cute charm may also find itself infatuated. The infatuation will only cease when one of the Pokemon is removed from the battle.
Curses are inflicted by Ghost type Pokemon that possess mal intent against their foes. The user sacrifices a significant chunk of their own health to deal significant damage over time to the opponent. A Pokemon that is Cursed cannot last longer than four turns, unless some sort of recovery extends their time a bit longer. A Curse cannot be remedied with medicine, and will only be dispelled when the Pokemon switches out. If a Cursed Pokemon uses Baton Pass, the Curse will transfer to its replacement.
Some moves may create momentary openings in an opposing Pokemon’s defenses, enabling the user to execute another attack before they recover. A Pokemon can only flinch if the opponent attacks first. Pokemon with the ability Inner Focus are immune to this effect. Roleplayers are advised to use flinches very sparingly. Continuously forcing the opposing Pokemon to flinch will result in negative points when your topic is reviewed. If the description of the attack is detailed and believable enough to warrant a flinch, you will not have to worry about being penalized.
