Aurmouth, 7:45PM
Wind drifted aimlessly across the sandy expanse of Hawkins Beach, picking up clusters of sand and tossing them back into the vacant dunes. Lavishly built homes lined the back end of the beach, bejeweling the environment as a monolithic symbol of grotesque greed and wealth. On the ocean sailboats, yachts, and catamarans littered the once pristine water.
The wood-layed porch creaked as a teenage girl in a white dress with scintillating roses took a wobbly step. The music that played behind her caused the entire structure to vibrate, strobing lights of different colors illuminated behind her, reflecting off the waves in the distance.
Inside was cramped, humid, and reeked of body odor and alcohol. The fresh air and gentle breeze was a welcome experience and, feeling the pull of the waves, she took off her faded white sneakers and stepped off the porch into the open expanse, each grain of sand rubbing against her socks as she continued on. The red cup in her hands slipped onto the ground beneath her as she absentmindedly loosened her grip, its contents sinking into the sand as she continued on toward the shore.
At the edge of the tides she sat down on the sand, arms around her knees as she looked out into the distance. Darkness was just on the cusp of reaching the city as the sky erupted into brilliant shades of pink and purple: The sunsets in Aurmouth were always beautiful. She sat there for a while, sand creeping into every part of her body as she watched the sky, hypnotized by the serene pushing and pulling of the waves.
“The sky is beautiful today isn’t it?”
A man sat down next to her, his jeans crunching on the sand as he came to the ground. The girl hadn’t noticed him approach, and was perhaps too inebriated to inquire about why he decided to sit next to her specifically
“Yeah it really is”
She agreed, staring into the angelic mesh of reds, oranges, and violets sinking into the ocean beyond.
“Do you come by here a lot?”
The man's voice was raspy but had a lighter, more inquisitive tone to it.
“Only When Brian hosts his parties, why? Aren’t you his friend or something ?”
The girl took a moment to think, the man sitting next to her didn’t exactly seem the same age as her, although Brian was slightly older than her anyways so maybe he did know him?
“I can hear them playing a lot of different songs over there, what kind of music do you like?”
He didn’t answer her question, and kept his head solely focused on the ocean in front of him. The sun was beginning to touch the horizon now, and its rays ripped through the water, shining brilliantly across the waves.
The girl hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to respond to a question so out of the blue
“I suppose I like all kinds of music, why do you ask?”
“Surely you must have a favorite? Just pick one”
He prodded, taking on a more demanding tone.
“I guess I like Pop the most”
She rubbed the back of her neck and looked off to the side at a ship drifting off to a distant shore.
The man chuckled, continuing to fixate his gaze on the horizon.
“See? Was that so hard?”
His voice reverted back to a lighter tone, as if to say “I told you so”
The girl shifted to the right, putting distance between the two that the man would shortly close again.
“So, what’s your name? What should I call you?”
Even in her drunken stupor the girl was extremely uncomfortable, she moved her weight around to find a better position in the sand, and began tapping her thumb on her knee. The wind picked up and a chill went down her spine
“Why do you want to know my name”
She said, no emotion in her voice to be found
“Because I want to know who I’m talking to of course, why else?”
The girls heart began beating faster, her teeth began chattering despite the warmth of the summer. She stood up, attempting to return to the party but was shortly stopped.
“Sit back down”
The man yelled, unconcerned with drawing attention as the noise of the party reverberated across the wind. The shock of his demand alone sent the girl to her knees, she rubbed her arms together visibly shaking from the cold that she now felt.
“What do you want?”
She stumbled across her words, the alcohol and fear coursing through her body making the most basic movements a challenge. The sun on the horizon had nearly set, and a deep indigo gradated into black filled the sky. The house behind them had lit up even more from the inclement darkness, and the sound of the bass beat itself into the girl’s head.
“I want to talk to you more, Cici, we’ve had such a nice conversation so far and I don’t want you running off on me now”
The way the man’s voice shifted from an enraged disposition to one of cheeriness was haunting to the girl and her eyes widened in horror as she relayed his sentence back in her head. She fell back and began shuffling backwards, kicking sand up into the air as she moved.
“How do you know my name?”
Cici cried out, tears welling up in her eyes. She had never been in a situation before that had terrified her to her core, but right now there was a pit in her stomach and she clutched it in one hand as she continued to flail in the sand with the other.
The Man stood up and turned to the girl, relishing in the pained look shooting across her face.
“I know all about you Cici, why else would I come here? I wanted to see you up close with my own two eyes!”
He chided, giving a derisive laugh as his feet plunged into the sand moving closer and closer to her.
“Stay away from me!”
Cici wailed as she struggled onto her own feet, tears being absorbed into the sand she took off down down the beach stumbling across the dunes.
Run.
Run.
Run.
The man stopped moving, watching Cici begin to go farther and farther he reached into his Black jacket pocket without making another noise. Nothing else needed to be said. The final rays of sun glinted on the cold metal as he aimed at her and fired 5 times cutting through the wind. Cici dropped to the ground, face buried in the sand.
The man waited for a moment, hands on his hips, admiring the beauty of the situation. Moonlight shone on the crimson sand, leaking into the ocean as the waves pulled in and out. The smell of gunpowder overpowered the sea air, all that could be heard was the pounding of drums from the well lit house and the crashing of the waves.
Slowly, he made his way across the beach
