Running around with her bubba’s (her younger mouth couldn’t pronounce brother so naturally they were her bubbas) was hard, them being older than her by three and four years respectively, they had much more energy and stamina. Alista wasn’t deterred by this though, Schere and Rozka were always kind to her even if she couldn’t match their pace. Plus Granny Lolani always told her anything they could do, Alista could do too! The ebony haired child tried hard, studied with all she had and watched her bubbas roughhouse for as long as she could outside of home. Rozka and Schere always let her play with them, too! She was allowed to roughhouse with them as much as anyone else, but they were always told to be careful…
But running and playing with the boys, those days were few and far between in her childhood. She was five when Granny Lola told her she had a new home. She was terrified of course, was Granny leaving her alone? Were Schere and Rozka going to leave too? Naturally she cried and cried until Schere and Rozka comforted her and explained in the best way they could. Her bubbas cried then too, hugging her and holding her smaller hands.
It was after tears had dried that Granny Lola finally spoke up and explained in a way she could understand. She was getting a ‘mama’ of her own, but she was staying on the island so she could always visit Schere and Rozka whenever she wanted and vice versa. Granny Lola was always honest, so if she said that Alista could see her bubba's anytime she sniffled and sucked up her tears.
“Oh... kay..”
Alista was upset and sad, but she knew she could trust her Granny. A few days later while she and the boys were playing Granny Lola called them from the next room. There was a strangely dressed woman speaking to her but when she caught sight of Alista she smiled. The toddler hid behind her bubbas who were giving the lady a mean face.
“Alista, this is your new mama. Come say hi, child.”
Peeking from between the boys, Alista understood why they were making mean faces. Alista had never seen her before! She looked strange, dressed funny. It didn’t help the trembling toddler come out- her new mama looked at her expectantly and it made her nervous. Her bubbas knew she was scared, and they sheltered her from view a bit more. Both had one hand behind their backs, holding it out for Alista to take which stopped her from shaking a bit.
“Who are you?” Schere asked, holding the tiny girl's hand firmly as Rozka held the other.
“I’m-” she began, but was quickly cut off.
“You’re not from here.” The oldest stated, moving closer to his brother to help shield their sister better.
“Well no-” And again.
“You.. dress funny…” The girl's tiny voice caused the woman to laugh, which startled her. Schere and Rozka tightened their grip on her hands and she would’ve winced if not for how tightly she held back to theirs. The strange lady cleared her throat softly and kneeled but got no closer to the trio.
“My name is Wisteria. You’re… Rozka, Schere, and the little one is Alista right? I’m from Godai, more precisely I lived in an area called Cadence.”
“Boys, let Alista see Wisteria.”
“But-”
“Boys.”
Alista started shaking again as Schere and Rozka parted, but they squeezed her linked hands to reassure her. They still held hands as she walked forward to stand directly between them. She wiggled her bare toes as she stared at the floor, her nerves causing her to fidget.
“You’re really pretty Alista, do you braid your own hair?” Heat spread to her face and she pouted as she snapped her head up. But once she met the green eyes of the strange lady she looked back down and shook her head. “Oh? Does Miss Lolani do it?”
“M-my bubbas…”
“Hm? I'm sorry, I couldn’t hear you.”
“My bubbas did. They make my hair.” Alista kicked the floor, but didn’t lift her head. Granny Lola said she should always be confident and look at people when she spoke, but she couldn’t help being a bit defiant. She was still upset she had to leave! Granny couldn’t be mad at her for that right? Sneaking her eyes over to Lolani proved she was right, she was smiling softly- almost proudly.
“Can I be honest with you Alista?” The younger girl hesitated eyes on her granny before nodding. “I’m new to Calta. I don’t have many friends yet, and I’m a little lonely by myself.”
“Lonely?”
“Mhm. And then I heard there was a little girl who didn’t have a mother or father. She was still happy though, because she had two friends and a very kind and loving caretaker.”
“What's a c-caretaker?”
“Like me, child. Granny takes care of you right?” Lonai spoke up and Alista nodded.
“Then by friends does she mean my bubbas?”
“Why don’t you ask her?” Lolani suggested. Alista whined as Lolani chuckled and jerked her head at Wisteria. Curiosity won in the end, and Alista once again lifted her eyes to Wisteria.
“Y-you had it backwards.”
“Hm? What do you mean?”
“This is Schere,” she tugged on the middle child's arm before holding out the hand held by the oldest. “This is Rozka.”
“Oh, I’m very sorry.”
“You talk funny.” One look at Granny and she apologized. “I don’t wanna to leave my bubbas.” Alista said, her eyes starting to water. “You don't have nobody. But I don’t wanna leave my bubbas.”
